Put a Bird on It! My Finished Tree for 2012
Not gonna lie… the first time I saw Portlandia I did not care for it. Probably had to do with the fact that I was hacked off in a super major way and in a really bad mood. I think my subconcious wanted to dislike the show simply because the person I was mad at was laughing at the show. In fact, it took quite some time before I’d try another episode. When I did… it. was. love.
If you’ve seen the show, you know all about putting a bird on it. For the final touch of my Christmas tree this year, I decided to do just that. Put a boatload of motherflippin’ birds on it. Gotta tell you, I think it’s pretty dang awesome. Pair that up with the fact taht it was quick and cheap and this DIY is a total piece of cake.
For this project you will need:
I found my nests in the floral section at Hobby Lobby. A bit steep, they ran 2 for $2.99 and were not on sale. I went ahead and bought 4 (2 packages). When removing from the packaging, take care. One of mine tried to fall apart on me.
Your birds will have some metal wire sticking out of their underside or along their feet. Pull that wire through the nest and twist to hold the bird in place. A daub of hot glue can be placed between the bird and the nest for a bit more stability.
I purchased my birds all over the place. The best deal I got, however was at Dollar Tree. The unfortunate thing was a couple of them were sketchy at best. Good thing it is a quick and easy fix.
If the eyes are placed oddly, they can be pulled out and set back in with better placement as the eyes are on pins. If there is an area where the feathers are patchy, like the red head on this particular birdie, take a bit of craft acrylic paint and touch up. Up close it looks iffy but from a distance looks stellar.
You can double up some of your smaller birds to sit two to a nest if you prefer… Any birds that aren’t going to be sitting in a nest can be easily added to your tree using the metal wire coming off the bottom. Simply place on your tree and twist the wires together to firmly attach.
Here is my finished tree, complete with stamped cinnamon ornaments, German glass glitter apple ornaments, little wreath ornaments and and the ugly base is hidden with faux gift. Every ornament on my tree save one was made by hand by myself! I also used grapevine garland, cheapie dollar store ribbon, cheapie poinsetta bunches from Michael’s, and berry sprays from Consumer Crafts..
Hoping you have a very happy Thursday!!! Check back tomorrow for some of the neatest gift tags you’ve ever seen!
