March isn’t over with, yet, but already this year I have hooked up 29 hats. TWENTY NINE! Whenever I’m stressed I simply must have my hands busy or I feel like I’m going to spiral out of control. But I put that nervous hand energy to work and I am building up a huge stash to donate next winter.
Hooking Hats for a Reason…
I hate to leave you hanging but, nervous energy aside, I also had a specific reason for making so many hats. In a post you’ll see very soon you’ll be able to check out 22 of those hats (yep, all in ONE post!)
But until then, today I’m sharing this free Alex Beanie Crochet Hat Pattern I whipped up late last year. You might actually recognize the design of this hat. Initially I had created the pattern just so I could have a pretty but simple hat to attach my free printable crochet care tags to for photos.
A Simple Beanie for All
Since this design was specifically made to be pretty but not call out too much attention I realized that it is a pretty perfect unisex hat. And that makes it a fabulous design for gifts or donations because anybody would like this hat. Men, women, children, everyone.
And so today strap in and get ready to hook up some Alex beanies with our free pattern!
Supplies Needed to Crochet an Alex Beanie:
The Yarn
For the multicolor hat I used Red Heart Roll with It Melange Yarn in the colorway Show Time. The solid color hat has been hooked using Wander Acrylic Yarn, available exclusively through Furls in the color Thatch. Both of these yarns fall on the thinner side of a worsted weight yarn and make a slightly smaller than adult size hat. If using either of these yarns I suggest going up to an I sized hook.
The Hook
For both of these Alex beanies I used my brand new Odyssey Hook. And I’ve got to tell you I am officially in love. These hooks are slightly heavier than a Furl’s resin hook but the Odyssey a nice balance that felt amazing in hand. I’m officially on the hunt for a few more hooks in other sizes.
FYI – These hooks are famously hard to get a hold of because they sell out so quickly! If you want to snag one of these hooks, be sure to sign up for their newsletter. They send out notices that a restock is coming and then an email when the new hooks are available for purchase on the site.
The Leather Garment Tags
For all of my current designs I use the faux leather garment tags on the hats from Birch and Cider. I love this small business. Great quality, prices, and reasonable time between order and receiving the tags. The color used for these hats are Bamboo. The Chicago screws I used to attach them came from this mixed bag from Amazon.
How to Hook Up an Alex Beanie with our Free Hat Pattern
The hats shown in this post used a Medium (4) weight yarn but they are a better size for children than adults. If you want to use the exact yarn I did (Wander Acrylic, Red Heart Roll with It Melange) I’d suggest going up to an I hook. You can also use a thicker medium weight yarn with an H hook for an average adult sized hat.
