Jewelry Making is a Beginner Friendly Craft

Even if you have no craft experience, DIY jewelry is beginner friendly. And with all of our linked projects below, there’s a wealth of tips, tricks, and amazing instructions that make even your first project a breeze!

Common Jewelry Findings – a Quick Guide

If you have the basic jewelry making supplies you can make absolutely anything! Below are the names and uses for the types of findings used in the tutorials below. If you have access to a Hobby Lobby store, you can often buy these items individually and half off with their weekly sale rotation. Other affordable options include finding kits on Amazon.

Bails

Bails are these nifty little metal pieces that you add to things giving them a loop you can run cord or chain through to turn them into a pendant or a charm. You can purchase glue on bails, pinch bails, and bails to use with jump rings.

Blanks

Blanks are bases that you use to easily make DIY Jewelry. You can purchase blanks for rings, necklaces, brooches, and more. You can purchase simple blanks or fancy blanks depending on your desired look.

Chain

If new to jewelry making you can purchase ready made chains for necklaces that you simply slide your pendant or beads onto. Or you can purchase rolls or lengths of chain and add other findings to them to make your own of absolutely any size you need.

Clasps

Clasps are used to close up a bracelet or necklace by connecting the ends. You can get magnetic clasps, lobster clasps, spring rings, toggle clasps, and more!

Ear Posts

Ear posts are used to make pierced earrings. You can buy flat earring posts that you can glue things onto or earring ball posts with a loop on them that you connect items to for DIY pierced earrings.

Ear Wires

Ear wires are thin metal shapes used to make dangly earrings. They come in lots of shapes so be sure to look around for what will work best with your design.

Elastic Cord

Elastic jewelry cord is just as the name implies, a stretchy cord sold in lengths by yards that is used to make jewelry that will stretch when you put it on. Commonly used in bracelets, elastic jewelry cord can be used for both children’s crafts and very sophisticated beaded designs.

Jump Rings

Jump rings are round loops of metal that you use to connect two pieces together. For example, you can place jump ring through a bead and around a chain to make a beaded necklace.

Quick Tip: To open up rings twist one side to you and one away to open and twist back to close. Don’t pull open because you will distort the round shape and you can’t get that perfect circle back no matter what you do!

Seed Beads

Seed beads is just a blanket term for any small bead. The sizes are often stated as 6/0, 8/0, 10/0, etc. The smaller the number the bigger the bead. 6/0 beads are approximately 4mm and 12/0 seed beads are much smaller at approximately 2.0 mm.

Split Rings

Split rings are like jump rings, round circles of metal. These have multiple coils in them so that you can split them open to hold things in a very sturdy way. You use split rings all the time. They are on your keychains and attach tags to a pet’s collar.

Stamping Blanks

Stamping blanks are flat pieces of soft metal that you can use a stamp and a hammer or engrave with a cutting machine or other tool to imprint with shapes, letters, and numbers. You can use various tools to turn the blanks into jewelry. For example, a bangle blank is used in a bar bender to turn them from flat pieces to rounded bracelets.
