These days I find myself being woefully behind on trends. I mean, I try to keep up and, to a certain degree it’s required for my job here, but dang if I just can’t seem to always stay hip to the newest lingo. Sometimes I learn of a phrase that is popular and it might have been popular for ages, but I just never heard it in my little social circle of old people and puppies :)
The word that I most recently learned was “salty”. And for all of y’all who are also wondering what that means, it isn’t like savory for like, food, it’s an adjective for a personality or mood, a particularly angry or irritable one. Though I like to be happy and though I try to spread smiles and kind comments around as much as possible, I can sometimes get a bit salty :) Okay, so I have salty flashes probably once a day. I think it’s just because I have such a low B.S. tolerance :) So basically salty means something like agitated. And, also basically, I’ve decided it is a slang word that I can totally get behind. I’m going to use it liberally moving forward.
So I’m minding my own business when I see a lady wearing a tee shirt that reads “Nobody likes a salty beach”. And me being me I thought, the only not salty beaches are the lake ones and those are never as good as an ocean beach. Hmm. What a head scratcher… do people really prefer the lake to the ocean if given the chance?
Flash forward to me doing my own thing, painting up a shiz ton of dowel rods and suddenly it clicked. Does that ever happen to you? You’re doing something completely different when you think of the wittiest retort to somebody hours after it would have been the perfect thing to say? Or maybe you’re drifting off to sleep when you suddenly get the meaning behind that joke that everybody else laughed at while you sort of looked around at everybody not understanding the joke and trying to read an explanation on the faces of the people who did get it? You do? Me freaking too!
So dowel rods. Painting ’em… and then I really that beach is being used in place of the B-word and salty is the hip new way of saying angry. Oh, haha! I like that. And then I decided that I wanted to design my own tee shirt with the saying but I wanted something different from hers. She literally just had words on a tee. What I wanted was a design that is kind of vintage looking, sort of distressed logo-type of thing that I can use a lot of color with. Oh, and palm trees. I wanted palm trees.
And then I was sitting at my computer nervously watching the weather to help keep my sister advised of the tornados that went down in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas a few days ago and I was trying to work on things but it’s hard to think of words to write a post when you’re hearing in the background “WE HAVE A TORNADO ON THE GROUND!”
Seriously, you just can’t concentrate while trying to listen to important things like that. That’s seriously what I had up on my screen in the corner while I was working. That’s a freaking tornado, people. And so wanting to do something to kind of take my mind off of things but not so much that I couldn’t hear when something pertinent to my sister’s location went down, I fired up my design program and I started to work out my salty beach tee shirt design.
Boom. Oh my ever-lovin’ lawd. Don’t you just LOVE IT? It’s so cute, right? Like, it’s my fave tee shirt design I have made TO DATE.
But you might have noticed that my design says to visit a salty beach. As I was putting the finishing touches on my design I decided that “nobody likes a salty beach” was a little more negative than I wanted to go for. And, part of the reason that I missed out on the joke at first was that beaches are salty, right? So I decided to keep it fun because “salty beach” is just plain funny to me, but to make it a little bit more positive because everybody has at least one somebody who likes them. So if you’ve got a salty beach nearby visit it, and, on the flipside, if you have a cranky lady in your life you can pop in and say hi! :) Haha, right?
Done hearing me gab about how old lady I am and how I just can’t keep up with the cool kids and their newfangled modern slang?
Let’s grab that free Visit Your Local Salty Beach Tee Shirt SVG file and make the most fun summer tees!
For this project you will need:
- Free Salty Beach SVG File
- HTV in 6 colors (I used light yellow, regular yellow, hot pink, coral, blue and green)
- Cricut Maker
- Standard Grip Cutting Mat
- Cricut Easypress (or iron)
Open up your Cricut Design Space and upload the Free Salty Beach SVG File. Now straight in Design Space this isn’t going to cut right but it’s easy enough to fix.
Move the palm tree out of the way and then select all of one color by drawing a box around it with your cursor. Right click within those shapes and then hit “attach”.
When you go to cut, this is the difference when you do nothing and when you go in and select “attach”. See how everything is going to be cut in the right places and when you weed your vinyl you just smack it down in place?
Now there might be a way for me to work my SVG files so you don’t have to mess with this but after straight up 3 hours making new files and trying new things in Illustrator and uploading them only to have them not work, too, this is the way we’ve got to do it for now.
IF you create your own SVG files and know how to fix this PLEASE HIT ME UP! I’d love to know how to make these better :)
Wait, still need to download that file?
Grab your FREE Visit Your Local Salty Beach SVG File here.
Once your vinyl is cut adhere it to your tee shirt with your choice of heating implement, FYI – I LOVE my Cricut Easypress but you can also use a traditional heat press or your iron.
Pair this baby with your favorite bathing suit and some denim shorts and visit that salty beach, baby!
Super cool design, thanks!
