Every year I think that come fall I’m going to feel so much better. After all it seems that when summer is over my allergies will calm down with all of the plant life starting to go dormant. But that’s never the way it happens. And every single fall when I start to get that awful feeling in my forehead and my nose and eyes start to water like crazy I remember… Oh, yeah, I have some pretty nasty fall allergies.
Add in the fact that I also live with kitties, who I’m kind of, sort of technically allergic to and well, bring the Kleenex on already. But I’m not the only allergy sufferer in the house and we go through tons and tons of Kleenex tissues pretty much year ’round. In fact, we’ve already decimated a good number of boxes just this month. So I headed into Target and stocked up on Kleenex 4 packs.
And while Kleenex has a pretty good assortment of boxes that are pretty and match my decor I thought it might be fun to whip up a tissue box cover that I could take down to my nephews. Nobody likes to be constantly dealing with their nose, especially not highly active little ones. So I decided to turn their Kleenex box into something a little more along with their style. That’s, right! I made a Lego Kleenex Box Cover and now I’m showing you how to, also!
For this project you will need:
- rectangular box of Kleenex from Target (check out this great coupon for a freebie!)
- glossy acrylic craft paint in your choice of color
- 1.5 inch wooden circles (sold in craft stores)
- hot glue gun
- pre-made rectangular Kleenex box cover OR
- piece of heavy duty cardboard, ruler, marker, X-acto knife
Now for whatever reason I simply could NOT find a rectangular tissue box cover and I looked all over town. I’m sure there are good options for buying one online but I needed mine rather quickly. So since I couldn’t buy, I had to DIY. And while it’s not difficult to make your own, it is kind of time consuming. With a pre-made Kleenex box cover you’ll be done with this business in no time flat!
Take your heavy duty cardboard (not corrugated but thick and smooth) and measure out the shapes you see above. The center rectangle will be fitting over the top of the tissue box. It needs to be 9 inches by 5 inches. The pieces on the side are 3.5 inches by 9 inches on the the longer sides and 3.5 x 5 inches on the shorter.
The squares will be completely removed and the corner as marked is the corner of the top of the tissue box.
Trim as well as you can will a very sharp X-acto knife and ruler. Score on the lines of your 9×5 rectangle but don’t cut through.
Fold the sides up to start forming the cover.
And before proceeding make sure that when folded up, your Kleenex tissue box fits well. The box should have the slightest bit of wiggle room.
Measure out the center of the box and make a rectangle for the Kleenex tissues to pull through. Trim out carefully.
With the corners brought together, use hot glue to join together. Hold firm until the glue cools and sets.
Use your X-act knife to trim any glue globs and even out the corners so that they look nice. Go around and clean up any areas that look particularly wonky, too.
NOW IF YOU STARTED WITH A PRE-MADE KLEENEX TISSUE COVER THIS IS WHERE YOU NEED TO BE!
Paint your first round of glossy acrylic paint onto the box. Gloss paint is more realistic for a Lego but it also shows the imperfections more obviously. After your first coat!
Take two of the 1.5 inch discs and glue them together and paint them.
Place them evenly on either side and hot glue them onto the box. Go over with one last coat of paint.
Pop your Kleenex box in there from underneath…
Voila! Isn’t that the cutest box of Kleenex you ever did see?
And while you’re here, I’ve got a nifty little coupon to share with you! Buy Kleenex 4pack, get a free wallet pack (2-pk) or pocket pack (3-pack) at TARGET while supplies last. Because a box for your nightstand or desk is great but with fall allergy season upon us, you’re going to need some Kleenex on the go, too!

Why not simply cut the bottom out of the kleenix box, remove the tissue, paint the box, add the circles, reinforce it on the inside if necessary, and put the tissue back in. Sure there is no bottom, but this lego cover has not bottom, either. Just a thought.
Mostly because tissue boxes aren’t very strong. This one made from a much sturdier cover will last long enough for me to justify spending the time and money on the project!
I saw this on buzzfeed called “The 52 Easiest And Quickest DIY Projects Of All Time” this is awesome :D
