Our Split-King LulaaBED Means a Better Night’s Sleep

After thinking about it for a while I realized that my current bed was almost 10 years old. Yikes! Where does the time go? I was in my twenties and started to have some really, really bad back problems when my doctor asked if my back hurt more when I went to bed or when I woke up. It seemed as though it was time to get a new bed. The day it was delivered I was so stoked and couldn’t wait to try it out. That next morning I awoke and realized that all of my issues were straight up due to a mattress that, though once great, had become less than great over time.
And then a decade later, history starts to repeat itself. Every morning my back aches and sometimes I’ll even wake up in the middle of the night and to take something to help ease the pain so I can hopefully get a little bit more sleep. It’s amazing how long it took me to realize that my woes were likely due to my mattress. I mean, I am getting older and, as my dad says, “never get old, Al, it’s the pits” :) But the first night on a new mattress and I realized that the bed I loved so much wasn’t the same bed anymore.
Now I’ve got to tell you I don’t do well with change. Like, at all. I put a new rug down in my old living room and my mom got to watch me sit on this thing and cry. So even though I was excited about getting a new bed, I was still a bit wary. But then in comes my new split king adjustable LulaaBED from Sam’s Club. But, wait, what is a split king bed? It’s 2 extra-long twin sized mattresses that hug up next to each other to form a king-sized bed. Each mattress has its own foundation that, again, pushes up against its mate to form a king-sized bed. What’s so awesome about this set up is that while it looks like we have a traditional king bed, we actually have 2 sides that move independently of each other.
But, again, it LOOKS like a regular king-sized bed which means it fits into the decor of any modern bedroom without any hiccups, which is actually a pretty big deal for me. Comfort is great, but I also want my home to look a certain way, too! If the mattresses wiggle apart a bit, you might see the seam a little bit in the middle, but the bases and mattresses are so light you can just give them a nudge with your knee to get them back into place and then pull the covers taut again for that perfectly-made bed look. And say what you like, but since the master is my respite where I go when I feel poorly or just need to have a break and read, having a bedroom that is beautiful is kind of high on my priority list :)
But back to that independent movement, when my allergies are bad I can grab the remote control and raise up the head of my mattress just enough that I can breathe through my nose again. And Rob’s side stays just as it is. No more getting up, going into the closet and pulling the spare pillows off of the top shelf, bringing them back, getting everything set up just like I like it and then hoping after all of that jazz I didn’t wake myself up too much to be able to go back to sleep. And since the motor on this thing is super quiet, I don’t even have to worry about the sound waking Rob up, either.
Plus we have had this issue where Rob rips the fitted sheets up off of our bed, somehow. I seriously have no clue how it happens but in the middle of the night the fitted sheet starts to get loose and bunches up underneath us making the bed super uncomfortable for me, but since he’s always done it, he doesn’t even notice. But now the sheets can be as wrinkly as all get out and I don’t notice. And when I have a bad night and do this thing where I toss and turn and huff and puff, he doesn’t notice because we’re technically on separate mattresses.
If you’re wondering what kind of bedding goes on a split-king, each mattress gets its own twin XL fitted sheet and then you use a king-sized flat sheet over both. While I had a hard time locating anything in stores I found plenty of options online. Oh, and on a LulaaBED each mattress has its own zip-off mattress cover you can wash in your washing machine at home. So if I spill tea on my side of the bed, I don’t have to mess with stripping down Rob’s side.
As far as how my LulaaBED sleeps, I’ve got to tell you it’s a total dream. Since Rob and I like soft beds we got the plush version (versus medium or firm). I was on the phone with my dad and I told him that this is, literally, the best mattress I have ever, EVER laid on. It’s like, this amazing cloud that I sink into just enough to be comfortable but not so much that I wake up feeling like I’m falling into the mattress as the night goes on. You guys, I can’t even begin to tell you. And this isn’t our first memory foam mattress. We got one a while back ago and we hated it and sent it back. It slept so hot and, though we got the plush version, it was hard a stinking rock as soon as we put sheets on it. Our bed is from the LulaaBED Coral collection that features gel-infused, temperature regulating foam and this one stays nice and plush and though you sink into it a bit, you don’t wake up drenched in sweat in the middle of the night.
Ooh, and let me mention a few of the special feature on this bed really quickly because ours is super kitted out! Not only do the head and foot of each bed raise up and move down but each side also has its own massage function that you can turn on for just the head or foot of the bed or both. And you can set it on a timer. I didn’t know what all of the fuss was about but one day I was reading an decided to try it out and don’t you know I passed clean out in there? The gentle motion was kind of like the sound of the fan… a little bit of white noise, this quiet but constant thrum that lulled me to sleep like a dang baby. And there’s also a nightlight function that lights up underneath the bed meaning I don’t have to turn on the little light in the bathroom that is dimmer than most, but still lights up the bedroom sharply until I can get the door closed.
Yes, that day two lovely gentlemen from Sam’s Club came and delivered our bed was a great day for me and Mr. Rob. We were eating supper when I got a call that they’d be arriving in about an hour, if that was convenient for us, which it was. Since we weren’t quite sure how the beds were going to set up with the electronics and whatnot, and a bit intimidated by the installation of it, we were more than happy to leave that up to the professionals using their White Glove Delivery option. I sat in the living room reading my book and Mr. Rob got back to work while everything was taken care of for us. The gentlemen unboxed everything, got it set up just where I wanted it and then gave us a product demonstration making sure we understood how to use everything. With a smile and a wave, they took all of the boxes and plastic wrap and headed on their way. Them coming and doing this for us was amazing so I highly recommend the white glove delivery, especially if you’re a bit apprehensive about having a new bed with electronic components!
If you’re interested in trying a new foam mattress I have to say that I LOVE this LulaaBED so much. It’s definitely the most comfortable bed I’ve ever had the pleasure of having. And all of the special functions and features of a split-king mattress have been surprisingly useful, too. Check out all that LulaaBED has to offer, including a no risk guarantee, at Sam’s Club and get an amazing night’s rest and wake up with a smile like Mr. Rob and me!
