Upcycled Placemat Storage Box Tutorial

October 15, 2017Sheri Pavlović

I’m slowly but surely making my way through my stash of bamboo placemats and after the fabulous success of my DIY no sew makeup brush roll I put on my refashionista thinking cap and came up with a groovy idea to help keep those excess bits and bobs organized!

Snag that old bamboo table decor (or pick one up at the thrift shop) and whip up a groovy DIY with my Upcycled Placemat Storage Box Tutorial!

You’ll need: a bamboo placemat, 2 equal sized pieces of wood painted to match and your trusty glue gun. (my placemat measures 30cm x 45cm and each wood piece is 12cm x 6cm)

Lay the placemat flat and glue a wood block to each side approx. 10cm in from one end.

Apply glue to the ends of the wood and fold the placemat up onto and over the ends your blocks. (This is the front of your storage box.)

Fold up the other side of the placemat and attach it to the ends of the wood to create the back and lid of the box.

Stitch a button or bead to the front and your fab storage box is complete!

Now it’s time to fill it up with those bits and bobs (or use it as a groovy gift box)!

This is cute! I can see a lot of other applications. For example, other textured placemats, or stiff fabric(like canvas), cardboard, etc. Thanks for this idea.
