Some of my favorite childhood memories are ones in the kitchen helping my mother. She taught me basic meals and desserts and always enticed me to help her by promising me the remaining brownie batter at the bottom of the bowl. With three kids, she was all about quick and easy meals that satisfied the whole family and it seems that the majority of families are still that way today.
It seemed almost too perfect that I moved back to my home state of Iowa to be closer to my mom again at the same time I was asked to do the Taste of Home Simple and Delicious Cookbook review. We teamed up in the kitchen once again and cooked our way through a number of different recipes. With easy to follow recipes, navigation tabs suited to exactly the type of meal you need, and affordable ingredients, this has quickly become a new favorite for both of us!
Overall: An extensive collection of quick meals for home cooks with a focus on families that have busy schedules.
With chaotic work and family schedules, the struggle to find time to make a healthy, delicious, and affordable meal every night of the week seems like an elusive dream. We find ourselves scarfing down a granola bar while we rush out the door to work, eating our lunches out of a vending machine, and serving up fast food for our family dinners. This book offers a welcome change to that routine with an extensive collection of quick and delicious meals that any home cook can handle.
What stood out to me was that while the Taste of Home Simple & Delicious Cookbook is focused on convenience, they did not sacrifice the quality. Even the simplest of recipes were hearty, flavorful, and elevated.

I found the book laid out in a refreshing and easy-to-read format. Instead of traditional sections for appetizers, entrees, and desserts they collected the recipes into much more approachable categories such as Finished in 15, Make-Ahead Magic, and Desserts in a Dash. Even further they have label icons at the beginning of each recipe like Fast Fix, Eat Smart, or Slow Cooker making it even easier to locate the perfect dish for that moment. Each tabbed section showcases thumbnail photos of the recipes with options to mark off the ones you’ve tried and make notes below, which made it feel like a fun challenge to check off as many as I could!
Autumn Apple Chicken
I had a tough time narrowing it down to which recipes I wanted to try first, but found myself gravitating toward a lot of slow cooker recipes like the chicken, Italian sausage sandwiches, and cider. While most of the recipes are geared towards families of four or more, I found it fairly easy to half my recipes when just cooking lunch for my mom and myself. The pages at the very back provide simple breakdowns for measurements, food equivalents, and ingredient substitutions making this a great starter cookbook for novice cooks.

Final Summary: This cookbook is essential to anyone with a busy schedule that has a desire to provide more home-cooked meals for themselves or family. I would recommend this to beginner cooks looking to try an array of dishes and desserts to hone their skills without biting off more than they can chew (all pun intended). I would also suggest this to families that want to be mindful of their budget while adding some variety to their weekly meals.
