When I hear about something new craft-wise I really want to try it out immediately. I’m not sure how Red Heart Reflective Yarn flew under my radar but when I found out about it, I ordered some up THAT NIGHT. And the thing is, it wasn’t easy to find in the color that I liked. This lovely peacock color was sold out on the Red Heart website but was available for around $9 with free shipping at Amazon. So I bit the bullet and ordered the stuff.
I was whipping up a pair of wristers within minutes of the yarn being pulled out of my mail box but I decided to wait until they were complete before testing out some neat things about this yarn. For instance, under normal light, you can faintly see a white stripe running through the yarn. But take a picture with a flash and…
The reflective strip glows. How cool is that?
Now I know this seems a fairly novel thing but I thought these would be kind of nice to wear when walking the dog and it’s just starting to get dark out. There is a lady that I’ve seen walking who wears a neon orange vest but that’s a little over the top for me. These guys are just right!
Now the reflective strip isn’t exactly soft but you don’t really notice it when you’re wearing the gloves. When you’re crocheting with it, it starts to rub your fingers in kind of an uncomfortable way. If you get some of the strip all balled up it can get itchy in that one spot but I only had that happen a single time on one glove.
It’s not a great yarn for a beginning hooker. The acrylic yarn is really soft (perhaps to make up for the coarse reflective cord) and is super easy to split. Plus the acrylic has give where the reflective has none which can get things all wonky where you’ve got more yarn than strip or vice versa pretty easily. I actually practiced for about 20 minutes until I got the hang of it, took it out and started the real deal which seemed a good idea.
I used this lovely free wristers pattern from Speckless (they’re in the round!) and was able to knock out a pair within two episodes of Downton Abbey!

Sorry for the awkward pictures. Never gonna be a hand model!
And since I just so happened to buy two but only use one skein, I thought I might give the other skein away so that you can try out this fun stuff for free and make your own pair of finger-less gloves! (Plus a few of my favorite things surprise goodies, too!)
Granted, this isn’t exactly a lavish giveaway, I know that quite a few of the most loyal readers here are from other parts of the globe from me, which is why I decided that this giveaway will be open to everyone everywhere. Even if you live at the North Pole and it costs me $60 to mail this sucker I’m going to!
I hope you enter and wish you the best of luck! Happy hooking!

These are perfect for the evenings, I definitely think it’s important to make yourself visible when walking around in the dark. You can never be too careful. :) And blue is my favorite color of all!
And yay, it’s international!
(and this is really a month or week of giveaways, isn’t it? I’m doing one too, but I just noticed there’s a lot going on :D )

Oh, i need a hat for walking the dog and a scarf for my ridingtrips in the dark (:
long, fingerless gloves for my mom, or a hat with ears. She walks her dog late at night, and has been living this hello kitty hat with ears.
i am excited about this giveaway because it does not matter who wins, all of us will be happy for that person. Safety is so important to everyone. This is a great giveaway. If i win, i will make my sister’s little chihuahua a sweet little sweater so that when she has to go out in the dark, she will be seen by anyone driving down that farm road.
Wow! Can hardly wait to try this yarn for: Writers, socks, scarves, phone covering, etc.

Allison, these little wristers are adorable!! They will be perfect for these cold weather spurts that have been going on this season. I think I might need to make a pair myself! :)
