Some time ago I painted up my doormat to read Hey Y’all and it has been complimented by an awful lot of delivery people. And I’ve gotten several “hey, that’s exactly what you say!” comments and that’s because it is! This doormat has gotten a lot of use and experienced a lot of wear since then. It’s worn out a bit but still totally useable. I thought about painting some craft acrylic right over the hey y’all to keep the saying but in a different, Fourth of July themed color like red BUT I realized if I didn’t get it done perfectly there would be orange peeking out everywhere. And that wouldn’t look good at all…
So I grabbed some red, white and blue spray paint from the local hardware store and decided to get all ombre up in this piece. Now when I see it I see the French flag which is patriotic, just not American patriotism. BUT a poll shows that I am the only one who instantly went there so it’s on the front porch with my pallet American flag anyway!
For this project you will need:
- Old doormat
- Flat red, white and blue spray paint (cheapie stuff works just fine)
First paint a white stripe down the middle of your rug. This section for me took an entire can to cover up my orange letters. But at a buck a pop it wasn’t the end of the world to use that much paint…
On one side start painting your red. First concentrate on the edges and then fill in the middle of the section.
If you hold your can straight up and down you’ll get pretty direct coverage. Tilt the can at a 45 degree angle like seen above near the edge to get overspray onto the white creating the ombre effect.
The paint hardly takes any time to dry at all so you can work this sucker up a few hours before your guests arrive.
Does your porch look like it could use some Fourth of July love?
For only $3 and about 20 minutes investment, this guy is pretty cool. Even if it looks sort of French :)
