Nourishing Medically Stressed Hair

You never think that something like shampoo can change your world but it totally can. I’ve made the switch to the NEW Dove Regenerative Nourishment Collection and the changes I have seen have impacted my life and my self esteem in a BIG way. I’ll start from the beginning… it seems like SO long ago now that I was diagnosed with IC (interstitial cystitis). And I guess it was so long ago… about 16 years now. For 16 years I’ve suffered and whined and been a royal pain in the rear with an incurable and very often painful disease. All but very recently I suffered without medication. For one simple reason… vanity.

It was explained to me by my male doctor that the only treatment available wasn’t a good option for me. Being young and unmarried he had taken issue with putting me on medication that would, quite likely, cause me to lose my hair. Perhaps he was old school but he figured a badly tempered lady who often would cry at random times because of the pain and frustration, who walked around with black eyes for lack of sleep and who was scared to ever go very far from the house for fear of not being able to be near enough a restroom was more attractive than one who was happier, if a bit bald.

And, being in my early 20’s I guess I must have agreed with him. It wasn’t until I was in my early 30’s that I started to visit a new doctor and was told this was ridiculous. As a female with IC my likelihood of death by suicide is 3 to 4 times more than the average woman. Medication was not an option, it was a necessity. And so I started my new meds and I cried and cried and cried with that first dose. Mimmie, Jen and Momma all got me hair pieces to have ready to go just in case my hair started to fall out and Daddy dyed my hair flaming red one last time :)

I was so worried that hair was going to start falling out at any day that I didn’t brush my hair for well over a year. No brush. No comb. No hairdressers. And no pictures to document my crazy, frizzy state!

And when my doc pointed out that my hair would have started shedding heavily by now since I had been on the treatment a good 18 months, I ran out and bought a hairbrush and dang if my scalp didn’t feel fantastic for it!

While I still have all of my hair (thank heavens!) the texture of it has changed immensely. I used to have soft, smooth and shiny hair that in my chin length bob got so many compliments. And slowly but surely my hair became fried and frizzy, especially around the crown of my head, you know, where I’d have bangs. These days that area gets wicked frizzy and curls into these tiny, awful looking ringlets and I can’t stand it. To keep things under control I had to pull the front of my bob back with a hair clip, constantly slicking it back to keep things from getting too crazy. For the rest of my hair things were managed by putting a heavy amount of product in my hair to keep it from frizzing out, but my scalp would start feeling oily and gross by the end of the day.

See. Here are my sister and me at the Creek in Sulphur, OK and my hair is back in a clip as usual. Also, you can totally see where my hair is going white around those parts. Not gray, straight to white. Because of the  poor condition of my frizzy hair I was scared to death to try and color it and damage my hair further so there we are, au natural! P.S. my shirt has a bear version of Notorious B.I.G. and it says Mo’ Honey, Mo’ Problems. Uh, uh, uh, c’mon… my tee shirt collection is stupid classy ! :)

But fast forward to a few weeks ago… I went to Target and checked out the Dove Hair care products and I decided to give the NEW Dove Regenerative Nourishment Collection a go. I got the Shampoo, Conditioner and the Serum in Oil. Now first and foremost I was totally stoked about the tube packaging of the shampoo and conditioner instead of traditional bottles. I’m finding that they are much easier to use quickly while in the shower, not to mention that there is no turning bottles upside down at awkward angles in my holder so I’m not shaking a bottle when I’m close to the end, and I love that.

But has it worked for me? In a word, YES!

Are you surprised that this crazy, frizzy mane has been tamed? My dad is!

And I am, too!

Actually I’m more surprised about the size of this fish. Dang! I did a wingspan for comparison :)

When I went to the Moody Gardens Rainforest Pyramid in Galveston, TX with my parents and my Rob. I made Rob take some snaps of my hair while we were there. You’ll firstly notice that my hair is not nearly as white and that’s because Daddy dyed it for me. Yes, my hair is healthy enough to take the dye without going insane. Huzzah!

You’ll notice next that in a place where “It’s at least 99 degrees with a humidity level of 140%!!!” (or so a fellow visitor complained to a staff member, I suppose because he expected her to turn the air on) I quit taking pictures of monkeys and butterflies (isn’t that a very pretty butterfly, though) and made Rob take pictures of my hair!!!

Now I washed and dried my hair the night before which is normally a no go for me. Sleeping on my hair and tossing and turning like I do means that my hair gets frizzy but especially near my scalp. As you can see I can totally dry my hair at night and sleep on it now which can save me some BIG time in the morning.

Ooh, AND I hadn’t brushed my  hair since we left the house in the morning. So let’s take a look (in close up) with smooth, not frizzy or tangled or weird hair but normal hair in crazy, humid conditions. What do you think for “99 degrees and 140% humidity”? Not bad, eh? Now it’s not exactly a fancy ‘do because I just dried it the night before and went to bed but my hair still looks totally acceptable for out in public times :) AND it’s not all white around my forehead because it’s healthy enough to dye!

So do I LOVE my new Dove ‘do? Yes. I freaking do more than I can express!!! Do I think that if you have hair that needs a bit of TLC you should give it a whirl? YES! ? I highly recommend you head to Target and grab your own Dove Regenerative Nourishment Shampoo, Conditioner and Serum in Oil. I just bet you’re going to be able to fall back in love with your hair again :)

Allison, I think your haircut looks great. I can’t believe how smooth it looks. I wonder if this would help my curly hair look less frizzy and softer. I like the picture with you and your sis, you still look beautiful with your big smile! Pat S

Thanks so much, Pat! I bet you a million bucks it would help your curly hair! I’ll see if I can get my sister to give it a go. She has the curliest hair ever! And thanks so much for your kind words :)
