Mayday Parade Custom Sneakers

So a while back ago a very lovely reader contacted me about making some shoes for her daughter, an avid Sleeping with Sirens fan. I took that commission and posted the details here. Since then I’ve gotten a bazillion emails from people all over the world interested in band shoes.

My most recent commission came from an incredibly sweet teenage girl from Texas who loves the band Mayday Parade. Her request was pretty darn simple. She wanted shoes made to look like the band’s album cover art and she wanted me to get creative about it, she wanted Mayday Parade sneakers.

The design is simple enough, really. The right shoe features the most important focal point of the album, the dude with the red umbrella. The background of beige with black windows and fire escapes was drawn on with fabric markers and accented with acrylic paints mixed with textile medium (much better selection of colors this way). In the end, I decided to bring the painting all the way down to the rubber sole, because the white there was incredibly distracting.

The other shoe features the sunny background and the Mayday Parade logo. In the album cover there were splotches and whatnot in the rays that I decided to eliminate, worried that it would make the words less readable. The area above on both shoes was filled with black buildings with orange accents similar to those on the cover.

To make the sides a bit more interesting, the beige background with windows and fire escapes was continued on the inside and outside. I wanted to maintain some white, though, and kept the back tag and the canvas above the buildings white.

Tornado weather put a crimp into things and delayed the process considerably. But all through it my customer was sweet and kind and even concerned. In fact, she emailed me shortly after the big Moore tornado to see if I was okay. How sweet is that? Seriously, I was totally impressed with this kid in the way she handled herself and corresponded with me.

At any rate, I’m still taking custom shoe orders for anyone who is interested. Shoot me an email at allison (at) dreamalittlebigger.com and send me your inspiration (images of cover art or whatnot). I’ll take a peek and let you know if it is something I can work out for you. FYI – the total cost runs around $75 for the shoes, the painting and the shipping.

Allison…these are breathtakingly amazing. I've never even heard Mayday Parade before, but I would totally wear these myself! So, I'm certain that your client is surely going to rock them with pride. The colors to the design to the detail…it's all top-notch. Beautiful work, my friend.

Thanks so much, Lauren! There's something so nerve-wracking about making something in a creative way for someone else and your comments are so much appreciated. The customer has seen a picture, but not the shoes in real life, yet and I'm a bit nervous! :)

I'm with Lauren… you are crazy talented. I clicked over thinking I would find out how you made the intricate stencil, but it seems you drew it… amazing. Artsyness is very distinct from craftyness in my book and you are the whole kit and caboodle. Awesome shoes!

Thanks so much, Laura! I appreciate your kind words :) Especially regarding the stencil – it was a tough decision on how to proceed, and the edges aren't as close to perfect if they would have been if stenciled but I think it worked in the end.

This is so cool!! I thought these are made using fabric transfer or something of the kind. You are a great painter, Allison! I always love your shoes creation :)

I’m pretty sure you’re the same Jess that emailed me, but in the event you’re not here’s a link to the exact listing on Ebay where I buy my “classic canvas” shoes!
