I have this constant fear that my house smells badly. Since I work from home I’m always around any smells in the home and I quickly acclimate to those odors, be they good or bad. It doesn’t take long before I simply don’t notice them until I’ve left to, say, go to the grocery store and come back. Have you done that? Left and come back wondering just how long has that garbage disposal been gross enough to produce a smell like that?!? :)
It might have to do with the fact that I have this crazy sensitive sense of smell. Say I go to the house of a smoker or somebody who works with something with a really strong odor and I get in there and I’m all, oh my gosh, this is too much! My head hurts! Fast forward when I go back to my own home and suddenly that smell will jump up out of my clothes and pretty much punch me in the face. Because slowly but surely, since I was immersed in it, I got used to it and forgot all about it.
And then back home I worry about the smells that linger around my own house that I’m used to but might cause offense to foreign noses. After all, when you have pets there are always going to be some funky things that happen in your house that will equal funky smells. That’s just a fact, Jack.
So I do the things I can do to try and make things olfactorily better. I remove canned food the moment the bowl is abandoned, I clean out the litter box multiple times a day and I wash the pet bedding at least once a week. Out of all of those things, the litter box most definitely has the biggest chance of reeking up the house and so it gets the most attention hence the multiple cleans. But you can clean out a box over and over again but if you use sub-par cat litter you’re going to end up with a stinky situation no matter what.
That is why I have been a long-time fan of Tidy Cats. It’s the good stuff and that means the smelliest of my funky home worries doesn’t have to be worried over quite so much. And now it’s gotten even better because you can get Tidy Cats LightWeight with Ammonia Blocker to help keep that awful, sharp smell every cat owner knows all too well at bay. Yuck. When used correctly (think cleaning out the box when you should and all of that) the Ammonia Blocking technology works for two whole weeks. TWO WHOLE WEEKS? I’ll take it.
I love this litter because ammonia blocking aside it also clumps like a champ, it’s not at all dusty, smells good (not overpowering fake floral scent or anything) and it’s amazing how much easier the lighter litter is to scoop in general. Tidy Cats Lightweight for the win! Ooh, and get a coupon to save some $$$ and try out the good stuff here!
Okay, so I’ve got the good litter which helps keep kitty funk to a minimum but I’m still going to worry about pet smells in general. And there are tons of things I can, and often do, but most commonly to keep things smelling better than just okay I like to use seasonal scents. You know, beachy things for summer and spicy things for fall… that sort of a thing. And since I am a cat lady I haven’t had candles for years and years and years. So when wax melts started to get popular I got stoked. You get all of the great scent of a candle but without having to worry about burned whiskers (and houses)? That sounds fabulous, right? And since I DIY all of the things I made my own. Want to learn how?
For this project you will need:
- Wax melt plastic containers
- Soy wax flakes
- Microwave safe containers
- Candle tinting colors
- Fragrant oils
To get started you can always purchase a wax melt making set online or at your brick and mortar craft store. This is an economical way to get everything you need including the reusable plastic containers. Should you decide to piecemeal it, you can purchase items in the list above as needed. You can also re-purpose containers containing store-bought wax melts you have used up.
To get started you’ll need to melt soy wax flakes. I have found that using little 5 ounce glass yogurt jars filled 3/4 – to completely full yields a really good amount of wax to fill the melt containers.
Place the wax in whatever microwave safe item you choose in 15-30 second increments until mostly melted. A small amount of flakes that haven’t melted isn’t a problem. Simply stir and the hot, melted wax will finish up making the wax perfectly smooth and melted without worries of overheating.
Add your favorite candle colorant and fragrance or essential oils once the wax has had a little bit of time to cool. If adding oils to very, very hot wax you’ll lose a significant amount of scent from the heat which wastes money in the end.
Give the wax a little bit of time to cool further taking care that it is still liquid enough to be pour-able and fill your plastic wax molds/holders. Should you pour in very hot wax, you could warp and permanently damage the form, so take care that it’s not too hot.
Allow the wax to sit, at least overnight, to fully harden.
Pop a melt out and place in a wax burner to help spread a lovely aroma to help keep any slight “pets so totally live here odors” covered!
Trust me as a crafty cat lady the dynamic duo of prevention (Tidy Cats with Ammonia Blocker) and concealment (smell good wax melts) will keep your help smelling fresh to the point you might surprise guests that you have pets at all!
