These days my feet get so hot. We’re talking I sometimes complain that it feels like they are on fire. And to match with the feeling they often turn bright red at the same time. I told my doctor, because when my feet were cold all of the time nobody could stop talking about Diabetes, and she looked at me like I was a moron. I guess hot feet just aren’t a thing.
It’s gotten to the point that I rarely wear shoes and I more often than not wear flipflops. This also means that my heels are dry, cracked and plain nasty if I don’t remember to grate those puppies down like cheese every few nights. We’re talking they sometimes catch on fabric and then rip away like a hangnail, but it’s in them middle of my heel kind of a problem.
So this summer I’m wearing more shoes and I am aware of just how hillbilly that sounds. “I’m gonna make a life change, ma, Imma start wearin’ shoes”. Meh.
I’ve found some sneakers that I have been LIVING IN. They’re these Nike Flyknit Tennis Classic and they are made of this flyknit mesh that lets my feet finally BREATHE. Now when we walk the mile around the house my feet are just fine and pale and pasty just like they should be instead of some alarming white. So I wore these guys without socks for ages because, well, wearing socks is going to kind of kill the whole benefits of the mesh not making my feet too hot, right? I’ve had stinky shoes in the past, for reals, y’all, and I was so, so worried about that happening to these because I. Love. Them. and I never, ever want to throw them away.
I did learn that these shoes are super strong. Like, I toss them in the washing machine with bleach and my whites and they come out looking and smelling fab, almost like new, but I can’t do that with all of my shoes, so I started researching what kind of materials to make smelly shoe insoles or barefoot insoles and instead I found that I could buy them for a reasonable price instead. Boom!
These guys are Pedag Summer Barefoot insoles and they have a terrycloth top that is so comfy. They’re padded and make some of my less comfy shoes more comfortable and my feet never get all weird and sweaty because the insoles suck it up and then mails it off to the moon or something. I really don’t know what happens to my foot sweat I just know that it doesn’t accumulate in my shoe like it used to when I’d pull wet socks off of my feet after a day at the zoo or whatever.
Flash forward to right now and I quite literally have Pedag insoles in every single pair of shoes I wear regularly. I also have a few extra pairs in my “sock drawer” that now can hold all of my bathing suits, too, since sock duty has gotten so much lighter.
You literally pop them into any shoe and then wear them. Boom. It’s so easy. And can you believe those rose gold Tanisa loafers the good folks at Shoe Dazzle sent me? Full disclosure they were totally free but I was sooo going to buy them because they are comfy and shiny and kind of pink and too perfect! And now, they’re never going to get stinky when I get all barefoot up in them, either.
When your insoles get funky you pop them out, throw them in the washing machine, dry them and start all over again. They’re just like socks in that regard!
I’ve found that I can wear a pair 3-4 moderate wears, like going a few turns around the outdoor outlet mall, taking the dogs for a mile or 2 walk through the neighborhood. If I just wear shoes more casually, like running into Target and whatnot they can last ages but if we go hiking I might decide to wash them after a single go. Since socks have to be every use (if that isn’t the rule I’m not sure why it isn’t because socks get super gross and feet are nasty in general so yuck) and I only wash these occasionally I feel like I might even be doing the planet a good turn, less laundry and all.
Now I typically wear a size 9 in shoes but I’m finding my size is creeping up to a 9.5 pretty regularly. I’m not sure if I’m growing or if shoes are getting smaller, or what, but something has changed somewhere. I first purchased size 9 insoles to go in my sometimes size 9 sometimes size 9.5 but I now order a 10 to go into all of my shoes. They fit so much better because you kind of have to jam them in and then they don’t have the room to slip like they do in some of my shoes that are roomier with a wider toe, or whatever. This is totally personal preference and it appears that most of the reviewers suggest going down to the nearest size when purchasing so you might want to try that route, first.
You can purchase Pedag barefoot insoles in a single pair or in sets of 3 for around $7 a pair. And you can even subscribe and save on Amazon and have fresh pairs sent to you on whatever schedule you choose. I’m not sure what it would cost to make your own but these are so well made that I couldn’t do anything better personally.
Okay, guys, so I spent FOREVER taking pictures of my feet in just my white shoes that I wear without socks and then I had nothing to do with them and then I decided that they looked like flower petals and then I spent FAR TOO LONG making this Photoshopped image of the shoes looking like a flower that I couldn’t NOT put it in this post even though I think it is about the dumbest looking thing ever. :)
And if you love any of my shoes here we go clock-wise from 1/2 o’clock, Nike Tennis Classic Flyknit Sneakers, Keds Women’s Kickstart Leather Sneaker, Keds Women’s Virtue Slip-on Mule Sneaker, Keds Women’s Champion Geo Mesh Sneaker, Keds Women’s Chillax Mini Eyelet Mesh Sneaker. I kind of sort of have a Keds addiction. And think! These are just my white Keds :)
Funny images that took way too long in Photoshop, insane quantities of Keds shoes in one post and all of that aside, let’s recap. If you hate socks, you’ll love Pedag Insoles. If you hate washing socks all of the time, you’re gonna love these insoles. If you hate the feeling of sweaty feet, yep, you’re gonna love ’em, hop on over and wear summer shoes sock-less without getting all stinky!
