Bloody Marys are one of my favorite cocktails to make (and consume) so I like to try new versions of the original. This time I used tequila instead of vodka and attempted to make it a little healthier by using fresh tomato juice. I suppose it’s slightly ironic to use fresh juice that’s packed full of vitamins and nutrients only to counteract it with some tequila, but hey.. you have to have balance, right? It made for a much lighter and refreshing version of the classic cocktail and the best part is using ingredients that can be found in most summer gardens!
(makes 4 servings)
4-5 medium sized tomatoes
2 stalks of celery, leaves removed
Half an orange, rind removed
Half a lemon, rind removed
Half a lime, rind removed
1 jalapeno pepper (remove seeds for a milder taste)
Half a cucumber, peeled
1 inch chunk of fresh ginger, peeled
1/4 cup fresh cilantro
1-2 tsps of your favorite hot sauce (I’m partial to Tapatio)
1 tsp ground sea salt
1 tsp freshly ground pepper
4-5oz of tequila
Prep your glasses by running a lime wedge around the rims and dipping into a shallow dish filled with coarse salt.
Remove stems and quarter tomatoes so they fit into your juicer easier. Juice everything from the tomatoes to the cilantro into a large pitcher. Remember this is fresh juice so separation will occur. Just stir to mix right before serving.
Stir in your favorite hot sauce and season with salt and pepper. Stir in tequila and you’re ready to go! Pour into ice filled glasses, garnish, and serve!
