Amy over at Mom Spark is far more down with what the kids are into so when she asked if I could make a fidget spinner I kind of pulled out a big ol’ question mark. A quick Google search showed these little three legged thingamabobs that you hold in your hand and spin. Hey! I didn’t know what they did or what they were called but I’ve totally seen those before!
Just days before Rob and I had hit up the local flea market and there were half a dozen young ladies selling these things out of quickly thrown together stands. One lady was seriously just sitting on her trunk with a pile of them back there like she was hocking stolen car stereos or something. Even the uber professional car trunk saleswoman had several customers gathered around with kids eagerly asking for prices of the different ones. “What the heck are those things?” I asked Rob. And when he didn’t have a clue I realized that we are totally out of touch which means that we. are. getting. old. :)
I figure out what a fidget spinner is with a bit of help from Google and I decide that, yes, I can totally make one of these. Without any kind of a plan, I head to the craft store to try and piece together some supplies to make this business happen.
And as it happens, it took me a good, long time to get this worked out. I didn’t want to borrow ideas from anybody so I just worked it out over the course of an afternoon. Let me repeat that, an AFTERNOON. Multiple tries and ideas failed spectacularly and then finally, oh my sweet love of all, it WORKED. It wasn’t pretty but it WORKED!
After I got one to work I was punching the air like some sort of crafty “Rocky” and then, and only then, did I decide to Google some tutorials. And guess what? There’s this thing called a skate bearing that makes all of this business so much easier! What?!?
So, incidentally and accidentally I created a DIY Fidget Spinner without Skate Bearings, only because I didn’t even know such a thing existed. But the good news is if you want a little project and you don’t want to special order anything, this tute I made over at Mom Spark is for you. Get on over there and get it, I worked hard on it, y’all! :)
