Colorful Spool Mobile

Hey everyone! I’ve got a project that is perfect for brightening up a corner in your living room/craft room. I also have a bit of a head-cold so I’m not feeling too talkative this week, sorry!

  • Large wooden spools (I used 10)
  • 10 in. wooden embroidery hoop
  • 1 skein of black embroidery floss
  • 10 other colored skeins of embroidery floss
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hammer
  • Push pin
  • Eye pins (10)
  • Jewelry pliers
  • Keychain ring

Step 1: 1) Hammer your tack just about 1/4 of an inch into your spool. 2) Cut your eye pins down so they only have a tail of about 1/4 in. 3) Use glue to secure the eye pins in the hole created with the tack.
Step 2: Place a dab of glue at the top of the flat straight section of the spool and begin wrapping the floss from there.

Finish off with another dab of glue to secure the thread. Repeat til all spools are covered.

Step 3: Cut 2 even lengths of black floss about 18 in. long. Fold both in half, place the top of the halves below the keyring. Bring up the tail and loop it through the top opening. This should result in the left-hand picture below.
Then tie each of those four ends in a knot around the embroidery hoop. Make sure your knots are all even so as not to unbalance the mobile.
Step 4: Cut a length of black thread and tie to your first spool. Tie the other end to the embroidery hoop.
Tie the next spool a little lower than the one before it for a cascading effect.

I thought my spool Pop Art fit in perfectly with my new mobile!
The spool is a reoccurring motif in my arts and crafts (I love it so much it’s even my business logo!) If you want some other spool-y crafts check out my Spool Card Holder, or my DIY Teabag.

Til Next Time!
