It’s been ages since I have gotten super excited about summer vacation but, alas, the summer of 2017 has been something completely different… it’s been the year of the Texas Tour! What is that, you might ask?
Starting off in Oklahoma we made our way to West Texas for 5 nights of family fun. There we spent time with family and hit up the arcade that had bumper cars that were amazingly overpriced but super fun, taste-tested snow cones the city over, visited an art museum, worked pulling up fruits and veggies on our Uncle’s farm, went swimming every day, played racket-ball and basketball and if we could have found another sport that rhymed we would have thrown that one in, too.
We then headed across the state to San Antonio where we stayed right on the Riverwalk for a spell. We ate, shopped and toured only spots right on the river and it was great. Did I mention that in the last 2 months I’ve logged a whopping 3,251 miles of driving and spent 9 nights in my own bed? Nuts, right? But I’d do this whole crazy business all over again for these boys, no doubt. To keep me sane we parked the car and only went places we could walk meaning that car stayed still for a few days. I have to tell you, having that car be stationary for a while was an AMAZING feeling.
With the car out of bounds, we walked 5+ miles a day and visited the Alamo, went to Ripley’s Believe it or Not, screamed in a haunted house, made wax hands, bought tee shirts, rode the water taxi over and over and over, ate $14 ice cream sundaes and even hit up another art museum.
We then made it to Brownsville where we hit up the beach in South Padre a few times, where we went horseback riding in the surf on one occasion, picnicked on both and, of course, jumped the waves because, what else are you going to do in the surf? We went bowling, watched a late movie and snacked at a diner at midnight after (a huge hit to stay up so late and eat somewhere, it’s the little things!). We went to a gigantic flea market and bought some cool junk and ate some of the best tacos around, too. This is where we also decided to go back to school shopping!
Back to school shopping is not high on my list of things I love these days but growing up I LOVED shopping for new school clothes. As it turns out, boys aren’t quite so into that whole business and pulling them around the mall in search of the perfect clothes can be stressful as all get out. But I do have one little boy who adores finding new clothes (and posing for photos in them :)
Getting things started with kids shoes, Conner and I perused the PF Flyers website and found that the lo-tops were right up his alley. I’ve got to tell you I was hoping the kid would go with red but he was all about the versatility of basic black. Boom! Logic and reason wins even in fashion when you’re this boy :) With his shoes for the first day of school selected it was time to move onto the clothing segment of this little to do.
First things first we picked up a pair of straight cut dark wash denim that, again, is nothing if not versatile. Rocking 2 different patterns, he chose a white tee with a gray paisley print to layer with a bicycle covered short sleeve button up. Knowing that accessories can make or break an outfit, and even though he can’t actually wear hats to school, we still finished up the look with a fedora.
And those shoes, though! The star of the show are those ab fab black lo top PF Flyers, am I right?
Just because I’m kind of a nerd I totally had to do a little bit of reading on PF Flyers. They sounded familiar and for a good reason… remember those sneakers that made Scotty Smalls from the movie Sandlot run faster and jump higher so he could reclaim a ball with THE Babe’s signature on it? Those were PF Flyers!
Way before that movie B.F. Goodrich, that, you know, makes tires started playing around with their rubber and shoe making. In the end they made some shoes that shifted the weight of the body to the outside of the foot which makes for proper alignment of the foot. That PF in the name, it stands for “Posture Foundation.” Cool, right? The more you know!
With shoes perfect for good posture and an outfit to slay the first day of school little man is comfortable and happy and that makes me happy. Everybody wins!
