A Simple DIY Kimono Refashion

April 20, 2015Sheri Pavlović

Ah Spring! Flowers are blooming, trees are budding and it’s finally time to pack away the winter woollies and get started refashioning those warmer weather clothes!

One of my fave Spring wardrobe staples is also a brilliantly simple refashion: The perfect for layering kimono jacket.

Raid your blouse collection and create your very own oh-so-simple DIY kimono!

Grab an over-the-head blouse or top and some contrasting thread. (Viscose, silk & satin fabrics will all produce a lovely floaty result)

Chop the blouse straight up the middle of the front.

Fold a raw edge over to the inside and stitch it down.

Fold it over again and stitch it down then repeat with the other side. (this double folded hem gives the floaty fabric some much-needed stiffness which makes the front opening of the kimono hang a lot nicer)

Select an embroidery stitch on your machine or simply set a tight wide zigzag

and stitch directly over top of the outside hems for some extra detail. (+ it covers any wonky seams that may have occurred during hemming)

Throw on your fabulous new kimono jacket and head out and enjoy some Springtime sun!

Brilliant, as always! Can hardly wait to go scour the thrifts for a likely candidate!
