My big ol’ Ollie isn’t such a big ol’ boy these days. Well, I guess he will always be bigger than any other dog I’ve ever had the pleasure of keeping company with, but these days my little “chunky butt” isn’t quite so chunky which is an absolutely wonderful thing.
I’m not quite sure how it happened but our big boy got much bigger than we ever intended and we still aren’t quite sure how it happened. I don’t know that we were overfeeding him but we were definitely under exercising him. Somewhere along the line of his weight gain, Mr. Ollie found himself with a significant limp. Vet visits and x-rays commenced and very expensive medications that would help the pain, but also shorten his life were handed over. That little bottle cost me a whopping $42 for 6 pills and after I got it home and read up on it I realized that was $42 perfectly wasted.
Ollie may be a dog but he’s hardly just a dog. People get teased for calling their pets their “kids” but somewhere along the line that is exactly what happened with me and mine. The idea of fixing Ollie’s pain was something I was dreaming of but not at the expense of shortening his young life. I mean, he’s only 3 or 4 years old. That’s far too young to be doling out medications that will permanently damage his liver.
And so we’re mixing things up to try and naturally heal his limp and the changes have been nothing but positive for our big guy. He’s still big but he’s shrinking every day, largely due to his new diet, we think because, even now that it’s raining lots and lots and we can’t exercise him as much, he’s still on the path to slimming down even as a couch potato :)
These days we’ve got bags and bags of Tender & True™ Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe ready to feed not only Ollie, but also our little Boshih Carly. Despite being completely different dogs we can feed both pupsout of the same bag because each Tender & True recipe. Do your pups of different sizes, breeds and ages all love chicken? Fab! They can all eat from the same bag of dog food because there are no special “puppy” or “large breed” formulas, just good food that’s good for everyone minus the gimmicks that have you purchasing 3 different bags of kibble every. Now that’s just plain convenient, if you’re asking me :)
We’ve decided that we like Tender & True, considered the perfect pet superfood, largely because it’s USDA certified organic without antibiotics or artificial anything, including preservatives. And if you’re wondering this isn’t a brand that is taking the current human superfoods and turning them into kibble to try and convince you that their formula is the healthiest. This is a company that looks at the nutrient needs of dogs and cats separately and then bases their ingredient list accordingly. And that’s a really, really good thing. Will quinoa make you a better, healthier person? I don’t know, maybe. But if these guys say it won’t help my cat then I won’t feel good that it’s in the ingredients list because it’s considered “healthy” either in general or for people.
But back to Mr. Ollie and his path to wellness… he’s eating good food and taking some glucosamine and walking like a champ and he’s healthier than he was just a few short months ago. He’s back to playing often and hard and you can just tell that he feels GOOD. And that kind of good means that his resident people couldn’t be happier!
