A day in the life of a craft blogger!

I remember when I first started this blog and tried to explain to people what I did for a living. It didn’t take long before eyes glazed over. I can literally not think of a single person that seemed to think that my job was neat or sounded like fun or anything. Mostly people would just dwell on the fact that they couldn’t possibly see how I could pay a mortgage sitting at a desk for half a day with the rest spent covered in tie dye and glitter.

Nowadays blogs are popular and lots of people have them. So when I say “I’m a blogger” more often than not I’ll get a “but what do you do for MONEY?” You know… that green stuff that you can hand over for a soda at the convenience store? But then there are other people… the readers who write to me and have a few questions about what happens on the other side of their screen. I can’t say that my life is terribly interesting but it is very, very busy! Want to know how a typical day goes around here?

6:00-7:00 a.m.

I don’t need to wake up at any certain time being self employed but this is just the window I’ve been naturally rising these days. I take care of personal necessities first and then I’ll plant myself in the yellow chair in the living room. There I’ll map out what I need to accomplish for the day and I’ll also add a few extra things I need to tackle the next day in case I’m amazingly productive (that almost never happens but I am an optimist :) I’ll check emails from my phone and sometimes catch up on what’s going on in the news.

8:00 a.m.

By now Rob will surely be awake and moving around. I’ll head in and make the bed, and if Rob “made it” I’ll redo it to my personal tastes :) Next I go around and pick up all of the pet toys strewn about the house which is a glamorous job, as you can see! I continue with the cleaning and pick up any clutter, clean out the litter box, feed and water the animals and if I find any money that has been forgotten in pockets or has fallen on the floor I hide it. <– That money is going to be a vacation one day!

9:15 a.m.

And now it’s off to work! But it’s not. My work-space will be a DISASTER from the day before so I first have to go through the office and get things back into order and find the items I need for my to do list projects. Oftentimes something is lost and I have a little freak out, finally find it and get to work.

10:00 a.m.

Out of all of my work I prefer the actual crafting and creating tutorials the most. So to start my work day I’ll plop in front of my light box and work on whatever project is due soon. More often than not, I’ll have a cat hanging around. In fact, I’m realizing that I almost always have a cat hanging around :) Everything I do is messy and sometimes these messes can’t be removed if not taken care of immediately so I keep a tub of Clorox Scentiva wipes for quick and easy clean up. I keep a spray bottle on hand, too, for when I need to let the paint or slime or whatever I accidentally got everywhere soak in a little all purpose cleaner puddle.

11:45 a.m.

Either Rob arrives home for lunch and we sup or he doesn’t and I keep working and forget to eat lunch altogether.

12:30 p.m.

At this point the dogs are getting restless and so I wrassle around on the floor with them or toss the ball for them to fetch. I’ve got work to do so I go with activities that are most likely to wear those puppies out the fastest.

1:00 p.m.

Now is the time I take to my computer and check for any new emails or messages and get those taken care of. I look for opportunities for work and see if anything I need for a upcoming project is on sale that day. I make sure social media is all worked out for the next day.

It’s officially time to get to work and I’ll pull all of the photos from my morning and the evening before onto my computer. I will go through and select one for each step of each tutorial, color correct and edit, properly name it and get it uploaded to the blog. I’ll start a draft for each tutorial and upload the images as I go so that I don’t have to worry about things going lost. It’s a perfectly reasonable fear as it happens, like, a lot for me including my last 4 or 5 recent projects, hence the radio silence. Ugh… I’ll also work on editing any video that I have going and eventually I’ll get around to actually writing the text for the posts and schedule them to publish on the appropriate days.

5:30 p.m.

Most days Rob is home by now and we’re talking about, but not actually doing anything about cooking supper. We will hem and haw and negotiate who gets to do what and we’ll finally get dinner going. We prefer to cook together making it a more social occasion therefore tons more fun than, say just staring at pork chops frying in the pan with a flipper in hand all alone.

We eat every meal at the dinner table with the dogs laying on our feet hoping for something to fall into the floor. If they are good and don’t beg they each get a bite of our dinner off of a fork as a treat. Carly doesn’t like most things but Ollie will eat anything. Carly will almost always quickly devour whatever she was given the moment she realizes that Ollie might want it!

7:00 p.m.

It’s time to clean up that kitchen. It’s not fun but it’s just a part of things and we do it together again to make it more fun. The dishes get washed and our counters get a crazy good scrubbing and for good reason. Both Rob and I are messy cooks. There could very well be salmonella containing chicken juice on the counter because we were flopping business around during prep. Also after every supper the cats start climbing all over the counter-tops looking for something to snack on and that means little paws that were in the kitty litter box are where we prepare food. Ew. We’ll use our current fave all purpose cleaner Clorox Scentiva largely because it smells awesome.

Now I first grabbed this cleaner at Target before Clorox ever asked if I wanted to give it a go (p.s. you can save some dough using the Cartwheel app when you check out at Target!) I grabbed these cleaners because I’m a girl that is a complete sucker for marketing (which makes people giggle because I used to work in marketing :) and the packaging on these guys looks like Hawaii and, I’m obsessed with the idea of seeing faraway places. Learning that the scent was actually “Hawaiian Sunshine” the future traveler in my couldn’t say no and I got both the wipes and the spray. Now the plan is after I’ve run out of my pretty orange bottles I’m going to try the other Clorox Scentiva scent, “Tuscan Lavender”. I imagine it will be so soothing and calming and I already know that it will smell great and that fantastic smell is going to hang around keeping my house so fresh!

Why do I love new Scentiva? I am obsessed with things that smell pretty just because. And as we’ve already covered this stuff smells ah-mazing. I’m also equally obsessed with cleanliness because I get sick all. of. the. time. unless I’m super careful. Luckily my new cleaner doesn’t just cover up the bad smells like straight deodorizer, it also kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria and disinfects my counters and toilets and crafting desk and door knobs and just about everything, really.

Oh, but I’ve gotten sidetracked here!

7:00 p.m.

Rob typically wants to catch up with what’s going on in the news and on Facebook and grade some of his students’ work so I’ll normally go and finish up any projects or post drafts because if I just sit there with him I get crazy bored.

9:00 p.m.

It is officially time to officially commence with rest and relaxation by  streaming my current obsession on the TV or taking to one of the many books I’ve got going on my e-reader and snuggling with pups and cats.

11:30 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.

It’s time for sleep until we start this thing up all over again at 6 a.m.!
