It all started out well enough. The boys were staying with me for a long weekend and we had lots and lots of things planned for those 3 days. We went to the kid’s science museum where they got to touch a human brain (yuck!) and experience the force winds of a tornado in the safety of a little glass booth. It was an awesome day for sure.
The next day we decided to “relax” as the older nephew put it. Our morning started off with brainstorming what crafty adventures we wanted to get up to that day and planning a shopping trip to the craft store to snap that stuff up. We got distracted and played at the park for an hour or so and upon arriving home decided that we should go have a picnic at another park. Hoorah!
The boys made the menu for our little outing… gluten free chicken nuggets with ranch, salad with ranch, ranch style beans (sensing a theme here?) and fruit salad. So we headed to Wal-Mart and grabbed everything we’d need from paper plates to Wet-Nap wipes. We got home, the boys played outside and I fried up a whole mess of food and packed it up.
We arrived and found the best table right by the playground. I was worried that the boys would be more interested in slides and swing-sets to eat but these little dudes were hungry. So plates were made and the grubbing began in earnest.
Things started off well enough and the wipes wound up being really helpful because boys are just messy eaters by nature it would seem. AND it would seem that most people bring sandwiches and whatnot to a picnic because it just makes more sense. But not Auntie A by goodness! She brings a glass mason jar full of homemade ranch style dressing and calls it good.
And then, this auntie who also doesn’t check the forecast, ever, realized that it was starting to get a bit windy. Um, maybe a lot windy? So much so that we had to put our drinks in the middle of our plates to keep things from flying away. See those strange wrinkles in his shirt? That’s the wind going crazy on it.
We had a few chicken nugget casualties to the wind and wasted quite a bit of food but we had fun. And, surprisingly, the boys seemed to think the whole thing was pretty great. Luckily our tub of Wet-Nap wipes were there to save the day. Because the menu was nuggets with ranch, lettuce with ranch and ranch style beans, and even though in Oklahoma ranch is king of the table, nowhere did it say thing about ranch dipped children.
