I was recently talking to my sister about the top kid’s toys for Christmas. It turned out she was already on the hunt for the latest and greatest and most sought after gifts. I was pretty surprised because it was only September, but I’ve been informed that if you want a shot at the top toys, you’ve got to find them early. Because come Christmas everybody is going nuts for these things.
And then I remembered the insanity that happened around Cabbage Patch Dolls when I was a kid and realized that this is nothing new. But I still decided to wait until November to share this because, well, September just seemed obscenely early.
My nephews have worked very hard to bring you their list of top kid’s toys for Christmas, 2013 and now that I feel it’s a Christmas shopping appropriate time I’m sharing it with you :). Click the images for links to purchase at Amazon. If the toy does something interactive or amazing, I’ve also tried to include a video so you can easily see what all of the fuss is about. And remember, this is a list by kids and for kids!
TOP 5 FOR GIRLS
The Furby Boom by Hasbro – I would have wigged out for one of these when I was a kid. The Furby I had was awesome and I adored it but man have they evolved over the years. With these new, modern Furbies your creature will respond to you, dance to music, speak to you (in Furbish) and play games with you. Quite possibly the most interesting thing is that you can shape it’s personality with how you treat it. That’s one smart toy! It interacts highly with the Furby Boom app – check the video to see a ton more about this hot toy.
Monster High 13 Wishes Dolls – These Monster High Dolls feature cute names, like Clawdeen the Wolf (in the purple dress) and come with fun little accessories. The bottom ones are for a Kasbah set for a Moroccoan themed dance party, but these highly ornate dolls look like a lot of fun and are definitely highly sought after.
Magical Talking Sofia and Animal Friends – Based on an animated series from Disney, Sofia the First -this sweet little doll recognizes and talks with her little animal friends, Clover the Rabbit, Mia the Bluebird and Robin the Robin. See the video review from TimetoPlayMag to see what all this little cutie can do.
Disney Doc McStuffins Doctor’s Bag Set – This little play set includes everything a doctor in training needs to keep her toys in tip top health. The kit includes a toy blood pressure cuff, syringe, bandage, stickers and a magical stethoscope. What’s so magical? Well, it lights up and plays magical sounds.
Barbie Photo Fashion Doll – This is no plain old Barbie.. it’s a real working digital camera that takes photos from Barbie’s point of view. It holds 100 images and those images are displayed on Barbie’s shirt. The perfect doll for a little girl in a techy world.
TOP 5 FOR BOYS
Despicable Me 2 Fart Blaster– I can’t say that I think this is a neat idea because I’m a girl and I’m the type of girl who thinks farts are gross, but little boys love gas humor, right? Obviously since they picked a fart blaster as a top 5 gift for a boy. Unfortunately I couldn’t find an official commercial. Aren’t you sad? No fart sounds for you! There is also a banana scented one but the price is about double.
Minecraft Lego Kits – I think you must be living under a rock if you haven’t heard of Minecraft. Apparently in spite of all of the advances in video game technology and graphics, everybody is all about a game that is about blocks (can you tell I’ve never played it?) But according to my nephews ANYTHING Minecraft is a great Christmas gift as is ANYTHING Lego. These suckers are quite expensive, running between $30-60 but I’ve been told that if you’re anyone who has purchased Legos before this is expected.
Dusty Crophopper RC Plane — Okay, I totally have to admit that I think this thing is super cute BUT if you think this RC plane is going to fly, it isn’t. The premise is pretty neat though. There are two controllers that go on each hand and each controller corresponds with the wing of the plane so you move your arms to make the plane turn left or right (while running along the ground NOT in the air). It looks like a lot of fun but watch the video in Amazon if you can’t understand what I’m trying to say (I wouldn’t be surprised or offended!)
Nerf N-Strike Elite – I have to tell you that when I was a kid Nerf was a big thing in my house. HUGE. Just about ever year my sister, my dad and I would all get our own Nerf gun or other toy. Remember the Nerf Swords where you knocked down little doors around to win? Christmas Day always had us 3 running around the house like loons shooting each other up and we thought it was great fun. These guns look even better! There are a ton of these suckers that range from around $10 all the way to around $50. I love that there are several that are quite affordable for the budget conscious Santa.
Lion Chi Temple — AAAAND we’re back with even more Legos. And while I’m not terribly into LEGOS this sounds like a lot of fun! You use the blocks to build a fortress with booby traps and lots of other good things. I can see how kids would totally dig this, plus it would keep them busy putting it together!
I mean, look at that thing. While the figures don’t actually hover (I HATE when they do that in advertising for kids!) it looks pretty darn awesome with nifty little figures and vehicles, too!
TOP VIDEO GAMES
Skylanders Swapforce – If you’ve ever been around a little kid who likes video games I’m sure you’ve heard of Skylanders. It’s just about the only thing my little nephews talked about in the pre-Minecraft days. The premise is that you have these little action figure things that you place on a dock that help you in the actual video game you play with controllers and whatnot. There are practically a bazillion of these little figures and for anybody with a completist personality, it’s going to get very expensive. I can appreciate how much my nephews like it, but I hate that each little figure costs so much and the amount spent so that kids can have “the full set” knowing that there’s going to be another new set next year. But oh, well, rant over.
Disney Infinity –This is one of those video game sets that runs along with the Skylanders concept. There is a dock that you place the figures upon to assist in the video game. There are considerably less figures in this set and I’ve heard some say that it isn’t the greatest game, but I still know one little boy who would totally flip out over having it.
Nintendo 2ds – The Nintendo 2ds is a little handheld game that is made for smaller kids with smaller hands and more of a tendency to drop things. The little handheld is much sturdier and features less options and buttons to make the use easier for the little ones.
TOP ROBOTIC TOYS
Robo Fish – I have to admit that even though I’m not exactly in the target demographic (kids) I really think these look awesome. The little fishies look like they’re really swimming in the water with real fish-like movement. I have a feeling these guys eat up the batteries, though so be sure to keep that in mind.
Zoomer Robotic Toy Dog – So I didn’t share the official commercial mostly because it irritated me, “Zoomer, you’re my real best friend”. Instead I found a video where a cat is meeting Zoomer for the first time (of course there would be a cat in it :) In spite of the tag line that has me irritated this little toy looks pretty neat. He can follow commands and because he’s got some crazy double-jointed-ness going one, he can totally break dance. I could do without the raising of the leg, though. They were really going for realistic, I guess.
Teksta Robotic Dog – Now I really like this little robotic toy better than the one just previous. It looks more like a real dog and it’s just so sweet. Plus it comes in blue or pink and pink is awesome. This is like a remote control toy that uses hand signals instead of one of those controller gizmos.
If you have any thoughts or suggestions, I’d love to hear them in the comments. And like my sister says, get ’em while you can!
