I’ve never been a fan of the ridiculous consumerism behind Valentine’s day and “traditional” romantic gifts like flowers, chocolates and store bought cards are such an impersonal waste of money that when I do take part in the holiday of love I prefer to create something handmade from my quirky little heart.
Take a page from this Refashionista’s book of romance and whip up a wacky little gift from the heart with The DIY Take my Breath Away Valentine’s gift + free template:
Simply click my oh-so-artistic lung template above and either print it immediately by clicking file then print on your browser toolbar or right click the image to save it to your computer, easy!
Once you’ve printed the template grab some pink felt (or any non-fraying fabric) and a few different colours of blue embroidery thread or yarn + a bit of stuffing.
Cut out your desired lung template size, fold the fabric in half, pin on the template and chop it out.
Et voila! Two perfect lung pin halves! Set aside the back piece for now and grab the embroidery needle and thread.
Using the template as a guide stitch along the lines with differing blue thread colours to create the veins and trachea details.
Carefully remove the paper and the front of your lung pin is complete!
Stitch a safety pin or brooch clasp to the back piece.
Place the front and back pieces together with wrong sides facing and stitch together. Leave a small opening for stuffing then continue stitching the fancy schmacy lung pin closed.
Once your pin is finished raid the recycling bin and create the card to present it with.
I simply chopped the back from a tissue box, added my text cut from flyers, drew on a bunch of hearts and stitched some scrap border around the edge of the card for extra fanciness!
When your card is complete pin the lungs in the center (where the word “breath” should be) and your quirktastic Take My Breath Away Valentine is ready for gifting to that special someone!
If you’re without a Valentine to pair up with this year why not create a groovy accessory for yourself?
Pop on over here and discover how to make my hilarious pin and wear your heart on your sleeve this V-Day!
And here’s a bit of 1980’s romance nostalgia to get you in the mood:
