Take your arts and crafts outdoors!
While we discuss many different arts and crafts on this blog, we wanted to take a second to offer a different point of view. With many of the activities we share with our readers, most of these things are done indoors. However after a recent study, the air we breathe was shown to be 2 to 5 times cleaner outside; rather than inside your own house!
Now obviously if it is raining outside and you have no covered work areas, you are probably better off staying inside. But especially during the summer, when the weather is at its best, grab the whole family and take your crafts outside for the day. Getting a little sun and having the wind blow through your hair will be a great experience for everyone involved.
What if I want to stay indoors?
No problem! We understand some people have allergies that really act up outdoors, and you want to enjoy your new craft or hobby. Won’t help you get much work done if you are constantly sneezing outside.
We highly recommend getting a new filter for either your furnace or for an air purifier; if you happen to have one. The most common filter on the market today is the 3m filtrete air filter. This air filter will catch items like pet dander and dust, to help prevent any allergy problems from arising.
While in very dusty environments, it has been recommended to switch out these filters on a month to month basis. However the 3m fitrete air filters have been known to last at least 3 months! This saves you not only the hassle of having to constantly worry if your filter has been changed, but saves you quite a bit of money each year as well.
An added bonus with the 3m filters, is that they are electrostatic charged. Simply put, these filters not only collect air particles that come near the filter, it actually acts as a magnet to suck the particles towards it.
Yet it even does more than that! Once the particles are sucked into the filter the particles are sorted by size, just as they are in a normal fiberglass filter. What makes these filters different is that after the particles have been sorted by in size, they are then sorted as positive and negative charges. This helps snatch the unwanted particles in the air, and keeps them in place!
What kind of activities could I do outside?
We thought you would never ask! Obviously with the wind being a factor here, you probably want to avoid crafts that may get blown all over the place. Paper Mache is not recommended. However crocheting can be very relaxing if you simply pull up an outdoor chair and watch the kids play in the yard.
We also recommend that any hobby or activity that could get a bit messy, be taken outside. While you could lay down tarps and what not inside the house if you are looking to paint a canvas, you probably will have better luck taking the project outside.
Lastly, we recommend all wood work be taken outside, or into a separate workshop space. Any type of cutting or sawing, will just create a ton of saw dust indoors. Without the proper ventilation, your filters will be kicked into over drive to try and clean the air. All this accomplishes is a very tough mess to clean up inside, while probably cutting the lifespan of your 3m filter in half.
So while not every activity is made for the outdoors, next time you have a chance take your work outside. Who knows, maybe the green grass and the birds chirping inspire you to create your best work yet!
