I am the family photographer. It might have happened when my sister was pregnant with my oldest nephew. Documenting what was going on from behind the camera was about the best I could do. I tried to be there for her during the actual birth, but the doctor asked me to leave. I was quite happy about that.
But after he came into this world I snapped pictures like nothing you’ve ever seen… There are probably just as many photos of this kid as there are any Hollywood celebrity. I. Snapped. All. of the. Time. And while a lot of our photos aren’t quite like most family photos, they’re all full of happy memories that resonate with US… that mean something important to US.
There were pictures of bath time…
and photos of hanging out with strangers at a fish festival.
And then his baby brother came onto the scene and there was teething…
…and time spent with bad grandpas.
and even badder Santas.
You see I haven’t been there for it all, but I’ve been able to photograph a lot. Like meeting new creatures…
…and getting to play with fireworks for the first time.
Thing is, all of these memories are stored on MY computer and flash drives and external hard drives. And sometimes I don’t quite remember to share them as well as I should. So my sister will call with a “hey, you know that picture of Holden with ravioli on his face and those fake tattoos you put all over him at the lake? Can I get a copy of that?” Sure, but…
…that’s just flat out inconvenient for the both of us. For her because she just can’t get it and do what she needs with it and for me because I have to go find that one particular picture and get it to her.
So when I heard about the Seahorse app I was pretty stoked. If you have access to an Android, iOS device or computer with an internet connection, you can share your photos with whoever you choose. AND they can share photos back with you.
So say we go on vacation as a family and I’ve got my pics that I’d normally get copies printed of for everyone and call it a day. Because all of these pics take up a TON of storage and since I’m already keeping them anyway, why burden them with that? And my uncle takes pics and does the same. And so does my mother. When it comes down to it, my sister is calling all three of us trying to figure out who took that picture of her son looking incredibly dapper at Legoland. (p.s. it was me)
But with the Seahorse app we can all share photos together. Because believe it or not, all of the pictures above this are pics that only I have access to. And that kind of stinks. I mean, they aren’t even my kids!
So the whole premise is pretty darn simple. You download the program and get it going. Create your own account and start importing pictures. You can do this from your device itself, from different services (like Facebook, Flickr, Instagram) or by taking a photo right then. Simply click the camera icon in the upper right hand corner, select the picture(s) you want to import and let it do its thing.
You’ll be brought to a page where you’ll add these pics to a “scene”. Basically you can create scenes for anything. I have one “Workin’ for a livin'” that was basically my tester to see how all of this went down. Next I have “Summer 2014” for pics from this last season. To add a new scene click the “New Scene”, add a name for it and then add friends and family who can contribute to the board and access the images there, too.
Grab the pic, choose the scene and you’re all done with it.
Oh, and as an extra bonus you can also connect with your account and scenes online. This is pretty amazing because I was thinking that the several hundred pics I had from this summer were going to have to be transferred to my phone to be uploaded to a scene. But I was actually able to just drag and drop the FULL SIZE images from the folders on my PC to my account. It was super easy and super fast. I just pulled ’em over and walked off and when I checked in on my phone while eating lunch, they were there!
So far I’ve gotten a whole boat load of pics into the Summer 2014 scene which I’ve sent invites to my family members to join in on. So now all of our photos are going to be in one place for us all to access to whenever we want them. No more asking every family member if they were the one who snapped that particular pic or waiting for them to get the time to look for it. It’s seriously just right there. And that is pretty dang awesome if you ask me.
So run and grab your phone or tablet and get after it with your Apple or Android device and start sharing those pictures with your friends and family. And let ’em know a Clever Girl sent you to get an extra bonus… Use he promo code CLEVERHORSE to get an extra 5GB of storage space. To use tap your personal icon in the upper-left-hand corner (mine is my profile pic from Facebook since I linked them up) and select the REDEEM option. Enter your code CLEVERHORSE and get your freebie! (code good through October 31, 2014)
And remember this is a great and private way to share pics with the ones you want to. It’s fast, it’s easy and it’s really darn convenient and I’m sure you’ll fall in love with Seahorse just as hard as I have!
