Refashioning clothing and creating groovy upcycled accessories are a marvelous start to a wardrobe full of unique sustainable style but what about your terrific tootsies? Your feet deserve to strut their stuff in thrifty ethical fashion too and nothing completes an outfit better than a pair of one of a kind shoes!
Refashioning and repairing your shoes (& boots) is a snap with a bit of imagination and my Refashioning 101: Fab Footwear Fixes! Raid your closet or hit the thrift shop and let’s get fixing!
I scored these awesomely comfortable wedges at my fave charity shop and after a summer of wear and tear they were in desperate need of an upgrade. A peek through my stash revealed some fab faux fur scraps that coordinated wonderfully with that bright orange!
I grabbed a piece of that funky faux fur that was long and wide enough to wrap around the wedge part of the sandal and carefully stuck it on with some strong all-purpose glue.
Once the glue was completely dry I simply chopped off the excess fabric and secured the loose edges in place with a bit of glue.
Already a massive improvement from the original but I’m not through yet!
The ankle straps were very worn and stretched out so I decided to replace them. First step, chopping off the damaged bits.
I then snagged a piece of thick elastic from my stash and cut it to my desired strap length. *Make sure to try on the shoe and check the fit of the elastic around your ankle before the next step.
I opened up the chopped edge of the remaining sandal strap, popped the end of the elastic inside and securely hand-stitched them together.
Then repeated the process with the other end of the elastic and my comfortable new strap was complete! As it didn’t look very stellar I snagged a piece of faux fur…
and stitched it around the elastic!
Then repeated the whole process with the other sandal and my fabulous new shoes were ready to rock!
So much better and so much more comfortable with those new straps!
