Rob and I have only lived together for about a month now but we already have little routines that we are falling into. I am finding myself extremely happy and when I look back at things I realize that only a few, short weeks in we are already making our own traditions. So far, every weekend on either Friday or Saturday, because Rob is lucky enough to have a 3 day weekend every week this semester, we head to the Big City! It’s smaller than my old “the city” but it’s got just about everything that Brownsville does not.
We try some place local to eat based off of online reviews. Like a pizza restaurant that has the most amazing gluten free pizzas and a tamale factory type of place where you order your tamales by the half dozen then eat off of paper plates at simple little booths. We’ve also had the misfortune of several subpar Asian restaurants. We always get ice cream at Baskin Robbins which is conveniently located across from the street from At Home which we also visit every weekend. There we look at all sorts of things for our home and pick up a thing or two to start turning our house into our home.
If you’re not familiar with At Home it used to be called Garden Ridge and they sell just about everything home decor related. They’ve got wall art, kitchen gadgets and dishware, gorgeous rugs, affordable furniture, more knickknacks and vases and pretty things than you can shake a stick at. You can completely outfit the kitchen, cozy up your bedroom and make the perfect outdoor oasis all under one roof. They’re also our Christmas decor headquarters.
Each weekend we have visited we have taken a stroll by the Christmas stuff. On one visit we decided we needed a gold tree and another saw a pretty “Joy” sign spelled out in little holly berries that we fell in love with. It would look killer on our front porch. Then I found Christmas dishes that are both cute and affordable that made me second guess why I don’t have special holiday place settings.
Last year I snagged a ton of ball ornaments from At Home but things were crazy and I never got around to using them. This year it’s totally happening and in my office and I can’t wait to share that with you in a few weeks! This year Rob and I went up and down the aisle over and over again trying to decide on the perfect theme for our living room in our “main” Christmas tree.
Our process of buying things is pretty simple. If we don’t both like something we don’t get it. Sometimes I think one of us concedes when we know the other truly loves something but we largely want our things to be things we have chosen together and both really like. Going up and down the 15 different holiday themes of At Home Christmas Decor we decided on 3 that we really liked and then chose the 1 that seemed to be more us… Cherished Memories.
These vintage inspired ornaments came in traditional red, green and gold. The one thing that made us choose this theme over the other very pretty themes was this heavenly, warm green/gold color in the Cherished Memories collection. Yep, we were swayed by that single color.
We also loved the vintage inspiration in each piece and realized this was the PERFECT way to start our own Christmas tradition… Using the Cherished Memories collection as a base we’ve gotten together enough ornaments to make a very pretty tree for ourselves. If you’ve seen my Christmas trees in the past I think more is more and it’s fabulous but right now our tree is fairly minimal but there’s a reason for that.
You see, Rob and I love going to flea markets and garage sales and antique stores so every year we’re going to set out to find a few unique and fun vintage ornaments to add to our Christmas tree. It will become fuller and fuller with every year we spend together. Isn’t that lovely? I sure think so!
And since we have these enormous ceilings in our new home we decided to forgo the 7 foot tall gold Christmas tree we had fallen in love with. We instead grabbed one of the 9 foot slim pre-lit Christmas Trees in the Tree for Me section. We were surprised to realize the cost was under $100 and just one of the everyday low prices we were going to take advantage of at At Home. Nestled in the corner of our great room you can see the tree from the front door, master and kitchen and it shines through this house like a cheerful beacon.
As we put our Christmas tree together I realized that while I enjoy sitting in the glow of the Christmas tree at night I have never really been a fan of tree decorating in general and this year I figured out why… I stress the heck out over perfection so hard core that I don’t really enjoy the process.
So guess how things went down this year… I fluffed and put the tree up while my Mr. Rob was at work and when he got home I sat and watched as he climbed the ladder to run tinsel up the tree. The next day I sat on the sofa putting ornament hangers on just over 100 ball ornaments and handed them to Rob who placed them all on the tree. Then I took the tags off of our new Cherished Memories “fancy” ornaments, the ones that are each a little bit different and add some flair to the tree, while Rob placed them.
I can tell you exactly how many ornaments I put on that tree this year… 2. The first to see how it would look after I fluffed the tree and the next my favorite one while Rob snapped pictures to make a memory of our first Christmas together.
Our new tradition, our vintage inspired Christmas tree, the beginning of our cherished memories together looks fabulous in the daylight…
…but one of the best memories that I think I will remember the most fondly is being snuggled up on the couch chatting about our days and loving on our puppies in the glow of our beautiful tree at night.
