I have a tendency to stress myself way the heck out. Like WAY the heck out. From the outside looking in, being self employed is an absolute dream! But here on the inside it can be so hectic that you don’t know which way to look next. And when deadlines loom and things need to get done, it seems it all happens on the exact same day. I can have no hard deadlines to accommodate for 2 weeks and then BAM! 4 in one day, some totally out of the blue. This is a good example of something that totally causes the said stressing myself way the heck out.
I’ve learned in like 7 years or so (I seriously have a hard time keeping track of time for some reason and eventually start making numbers up) that there are these things called muscle knots. Heard of ’em? They painful. Stupid painful. When things get wicked crazy and I put the weight of the world on my own two shoulders and all of that stress causes these awful knots to develop in my neck, shoulders and back. It got so bad at one point that I actually had to figure something out to help alleviate my stress.
In the end I decided that sometimes I need some “me” time. In this time I do something that is in no way, shape or form productive. It does not help with my work. It does nothing but help me to make myself happy and stress-free for a few, wonderful minutes (okay, sometimes an hour or maybe even two!)
One of my favorite things to do in the whole wide world is to read. I can read 4 or 5 books a week in my free time. I don’t watch much television and I live alone and that makes for lots and lots of reading time. Sometimes, during the day I’ll do my best to make myself a snack or something special to drink and tuck into my latest and greatest read right smack dab in the middle of the craziness. On the menu nearly every time? Tea. I love me some tea! Black tea, green tea, chai tea… it’s all good. It all makes me happy.
But I’ve never been able to make myself a chai like I get at coffee shops. And most of the time the ones I buy pre-prepared don’t do it for me. There’s always something “canned” about them. I was pretty stoked to see International Delight Chai Tea Lattes in the milk case at my grocery store and I snagged both the vanilla and the caramel. The package says you can have them either iced or hot and seeing how I hardly ever have ice on hand I busted out the coffee mug and took to the love-seat for some afternoon reading.
I love this love-seat for a few reasons… it’s hardly been used as I only use it when reading so it’s almost like sitting in a new chair every time. I don’t know why I like that, but I do. The table is near enough I can put my drink and snacks nearby and there is no glare to compete with the words on my Kindle’s screen. It is my little piece of afternoon heaven. For real.
I mean, look at that. How could that not be the perfect place to get some a little bit of relaxation to perk up for the rest of a busy work day? In all honesty, I have found that the times when I make a good, solid effort to have this me time in my favorite spot in the living room, I work better and am more productive. My mind gets away from the tasks and problems at hand and I come back with new ideas and new ways to create something.
And now I have a new beverage to add to my break time menu when I want a little bit of spice and maybe a new ingredient for some recipes? To see ideas and recipes from International Delight, sign up for their newsletter and get in on the break time fun :)
