Ever since I was a kid I’ve always loved summer. But I especially loved summer after my parents, sister and I moved away from the rest of the family when I was a kid. Because at summer time we got together again and had lake vacations!
The little trips were often just to the lake in the same town that we lived in but I still couldn’t have been happier. Prior to my dad being relocated for work we lived only 18 miles from Momma’s side of the family and we spent so much time together. I’ve often talked about Mimmie and Poppa and how much I stayed with them, but I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned latching onto the posts on the porch with arms and legs tightly wrapped around and crying because I didn’t want the weekend to be over.
We had meals together often around a big pan of lasagna and a Mississippi mud cake followed by everyone sitting on the porch while my sister and I ran around in the super soft grass of Mimmie’s backyard. My Uncle Leslie (now known as Uncle Skunk) and Aunt Lisa’s house for SEGA — my sister and I fareeeking loved Sonic and the only place we could play it was at their house. We also loved their dogs and they’re probably the biggest reason my sister and I are crazy for the pooches. They all came to our dance recitals and big events and we were so CLOSE, both in proximity and in relationships. Moving away was really hard for us all and that’s why these visits and these summers meant so much to us.
This summer was a big blow out as usual with all of the familiar suspects as we all drove from our homes to meet up and totally hillbilly it up at the lake. There was fishing (I caught two and got sad about hurting them and quit) and swimming and ziplining (actually only my sister and I were brave enough) and fireworks (some super hillbilly kaboomin’) and lots and lots of good food. On one particularly hot and sticky day we all cooled off with some super tasty Fruttare bars. Now none of us had ever sampled these tasty guys before and we were all pretty darn excited for a refreshing treat on the dock.
Said zip lining… WARNING – I apparently scream like a banshee:
Though there were 10 different flavors to choose from, we snapped up boxes of black cherry and strawberry at WalMart and some mango bars at Brookshire’s on our in town grocery trip and then coconut and milk, again, from WalMart (no worries, though, these fruit bars are sold in tons of stores all over the country). One very hot and muggy afternoon, it seemed too perfect and we busted our sweet treats out.
And while our family break and bonding time over these tasty frozen fruit bars, the nephew got a quick lesson in product placement from Uncle Skunk while chowing down! My dad refused to step away from his fishing pole even for a minute, lest that be the minute that the big one just happened to bite… Mimmie, ever the family matriarch, snacked on strawberry while watching over us from the shade and breeze of the overhead fan of the back porch.
And when our first Fruttare bars were done, the boys and I snuck in and grabbed more. So impressed with our first, we wanted to know what every flavor tasted like. Even with the stank of bloodbait feet away from us, we sat cross-legged in the middle of the dock and passed the bars around each assessing the flavors like we were fancy people drinking fine wines. In the end the little one and I decided we were mad about mango and the oldest a strawberry lover to the core.
But no matter the flavor, we decided they were an amazingly tasty and refreshing treat that would be gracing the shelves of our freezers all season long. Spending time with my family is always amazing and be it this particular lake, the good food or something I can’t quite place my finger on, 2014 was the BEST. SUMMER. EVER.
