So I’ve been living in my new residence for 6 months. I’m about 1/4 of a mile from a tortilleria (where they make tortillas fresh every day) and 1/2 a mile from a snack stand. These snack stands are HUGE business here and they are everywhere. Nothing you can get there is overly good for you, even a “fruit cup” is humongous with more food than you should actually eat in one setting and covered in honey or sweetened condensed milk and granola and tamarind straws and all sorts of stuff. My big thing are raspas (snowcones) and my favorite is the Fresa Platano that is a snowcone made with real coconut milk topped with strawberries, bananas, sweetened condensed milk, whipped cream, flaked coconut and a cherry. My dear word it’s high calorie but it is also amazing.
When I first moved here I could hardly eat half of one of these things and now I take them out! Somewhere along the line of all of this good food being introduced to me I started eating more and more and more. Now I’m not considered overweight, yet. My doctor says I’m just fine and within a healthy range but I lead a really, really sedentary lifestyle seeing as how I work from home. I get up out of bed, walk across the house and plant my expanding booty in my office chair and type at the computer or start gluing things onto other things. If I keep eating poorly and sitting still most of the day it won’t be long before I’m not within a healthy weight range.
And then we have Rob. He’s all about health and suggested guidelines for daily activity and stuff. So one day Rob decides that he wants to get back to being fit and actually meeting those suggested guidelines we head out and he buys some dumb bell weights and gets after it on the regular. It’s working and he’s got muscles starting to pop out of his shirts but eventually he realizes he needs “leg day” every now and then to keep things proportionate. I guess if you’re going to work out the top you might as well get the bottom, too. I mean, could you tip over? Or would he just look weird all big on top with scrawny legs on bottom. Ha! That would be weird.
At any rate Rob changes into workout gear and asks me to come along to the gym where he’s officially going to sign up and become a member. I don’t really want to go but that’s a part of relationships, right? You sometimes do something the other person wants to do. But I DO NOT put on work out clothes. No thanks! We go and Rob signs up joining the slightly more expensive package so that I can accompany him as his guest from time to time. I tell him that I might go on occasion but I don’t know if it would be worth the extra cost. He goes ahead and does his thing and signs us both up. He takes me on a tour hoping I’ll get interested and when I don’t he decides that it is time to work out. I decide it is high time to check out the bargains at the thrift store down the way. To be fair, I walked there so I did get a bit of exercise.
The next day he asks me to go to the gym with him and I think about how he spent more money just so I could go and so I do. I’m about to guilt exercise. I ride a stationary bicycle for 30 minutes after realizing that the elliptical is NOT for me within about 30 seconds. Like at all. How do people do that and not tip right on over? Perhaps my balance is just awful (p.s. it IS) but that is just nutty to me and I wound up watching a bazillion people make it work no problem-o while I pedaled my way up and down imaginary hills at a nice, leisurely pace.
So you might be wondering, is Allison now a gym rat? Is this her new jam? Fitness? Nope. It’s not. But it is Rob’s jam and I can totally appreciate that. We’re starting to get him ZonePerfect® Nutrition Bars for extra protein and because he needs some healthy snacks that are perfect for his new higher energy lifestyle. And even though we work at our own pace it seems we are always busy. Rob has a big show coming up so he’s painting like crazy trying to fill it up with as many pieces as possible. I’ve gotten a TON of work here lately and I’m staying on the computer an extra few hours every day just to (barely) keep up. AND I’ve got to get ahead of schedule because we’ve got a trip out of town coming up soon. With as busy as things are if we didn’t have bars in the pantry and in our go bag there would be times we just wouldn’t be able to make the time to make anything else work. And since we dig the flavor of our bars and come away feeling satisfied by their high quality taste the convenience is only a part of the reason why we’re keeping them on hand.
Nutrition bars aside, Rob truly is all over this getting fit thing like you wouldn’t believe. And so, maybe once or twice a week, I put on my sneakers and I hop on that bicycle and I watch people use machines that confound me. We would go on the weekends when Rob had off work and a weeknight when I wasn’t just swamped.
Things have changed a bit here lately because we don’t always have a schedule these days. I mean, I’m self employed and Rob doesn’t have to work for the summer (can you say lucky?!) So we sometimes just up and decide to go. And that’s why I’m making us a “go bag” to make the whole thing infinitely less stressful.
Now I already have a crafty go bag and it’s one of my fave things ever. It’s basically a canvas tote that has my current embroidery project and a few other easily doable while on the road or in a waiting room crafts. I have my notepad and some markers in there so I can doodle and sometimes I’ll have yarn for a little crochet project.
It only made sense that we had a “gym go bag,” especially in light of all of the times we scramble like idiots trying to find everything we need making me in a pissy mood before we’ve even gotten in the car to leave. AND I kind of got tired of keeping my sneakers in the backseat of the car all of the time. The back of my car isn’t a closet! It’s a doggy hair refuge :) So let’s quickly go into the details of our go bag.
We went just about everywhere trying to find a good bag that was simple. We found good looking bags that were an arm and a leg because they had an expensive brand name on them. Since we’re old enough that we don’t care if we’re carrying the “in” gym bag we scoffed at the double digit price tags and kept on a moving. We actually found this simple bag at Walmart after we figured out the right place to look. Our first trip we only looked in sporting goods and those bags were too big for the itty bitty lockers the gym has. But this bag we found in the purses and luggage type of section of the store right near the jewelry section. And while Rob first worried it looked feminine, it didn’t take long to realize this was the exact same bag we had checked out at the sporting goods store it just didn’t have some fancy saying on it. BUT, luckily he knows a gal who can fix that up quicksmart!
I busted out my collection of HTV and thanked the heavens that I had a piece of neon green just waiting for a project. To keep things simple, and since we both liked the green dot logo on the box of ZonePerfect® Nutrition Bars we went with “in the zone” in a circle. Simple, effective and it looks pretty smart if I do say so myself. Now you can download this file to make cut this exact design for yourself if you’d like, but feel free to go with what you like best.
Cut that business out and iron it onto your bag. Now this bag is some kind of polyester or acrylic or something so not natural. DO NOT use the cotton setting or you’re going to have a mess on your hands. To transfer the HTV effectively use the iron on the appropriate setting for your fabric. Hold down the iron with a count of 10-15 in any one given area and move around to cover the full transfer. Allow the entire decal to cool completely. Give the clear top piece a flick and if it starts to come off cleanly, nifty, but chances are you’ll need to do 2-3 more passes for it to actually stick using the lower temperature.
Boom! Check out that guy with his bag. Now apparently a camera in the gym is an odd thing so I had to kind of sneak pics using my phone, hence the not as great quality as I usually try to produce (I’m not a pro so sometimes my attempts do fall a bit flat!) It was actually kind of fun trying to be all covert-like.
I did realize that I’m getting to enjoy parts of going to the gym. The working out, not so much. But I like riding in the car on our way while we eat our protein bars and chug a bunch of water to keep us hydrated and talk about what we’re likely to do and how silly we will look on that dang stair machine that shoots way up in the sky (which we were still too shy to try and it doesn’t really matter because this lady was on one of the doing these weird back kicks and gettin’ after it!) with the other machine had some dude who was just, you know, climbing stairs and trying to watch some TV.
I come running out of the women’s locker room and I’m all GIVE ME THE BAG! and I run back and take a pic with my phone until two girls kind of give me this weird look. I can tell you that I’ve only seen anybody in that dressing room ONCE but on the day I want to take pics of my bag it’s like Grand Central Station up in here. Ladies in. Ladies out. Ladies on the scales. It was crazy.
Oh, and I figured out my brand new lock didn’t work. It’s too big. Womp. Womp. Here I am getting all invested in gym time and even have Rob buy me a lock and what happens? He just wasted $6! So Rob got to carry the bag around because I’d eventually forget it and lose it. Maybe. Probably.
So while Rob had his leg day with his new go bag filled with ZonePerfect® Nutrition Bars, bottles of water and then all of the boring things like car keys and digital cameras that didn’t see the light of day I tried that darn elliptical again and got a whole 8 minutes in! Woot! And then I rode that stationary bike fast as I could for over 20 minutes – go me! After we left I didn’t even ASK for ice cream or fro-yo. I just took my workout like a grown woman and complained about the burn in my thighs most of the ride home :)
Now don’t forget when you’re grabbing things for your gym go bag to pick up a few boxes of convenient ZonePerfect® Nutrition bars. They’ve got some tasty recipes including Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Fudge Graham and Cinnamon Roll that were developed by a nutrition company to have no less than 10 grams of protein without any HFCS and provide a good source of fiber for you and your family. Oh, and when you buy 2 at Walmart you can get a value bundle price and save $4!
Even if you’re not the type to “work out” grab a bar for a little Snack and Rally! Because even if you don’t admit it, you’ll feel better after you do get a bit of a workout in!Written by Allison Murray - Visit Website
