I remember the first time my nephew told me all about his favorite bird. We all could have guessed which bird that would have been simply because he’s had the same favorite color since he discovered Spiderman when he was 2 or 3 years old. Sure he wavered to orange being a favorite for a short time but that’s when neon orange was all the rage at school and it didn’t take long before he was back to declaring red as the best color ever. Needless to say, this inspired these fun cookie ball pops as the perfect winter sweet snack!
I mean, it’s so neat that he gets so excited when he spies a pretty red robin, especially if it has been snowing. Those red feathers pop against the background and suddenly this bird seems like it could be the center of the whole universe.
For this project you will need:
- 1 pkg. (8 oz.) brick cream cheese, softened
- Lollipop sticks
- 36 sandwich cookies, finely crushed (like OREO or Glutino)
- Red melting candy coating wafers
- White melting candy coating wafers
- Edible markers
- Candy eyes (look in the craft baking section)
Place your cookies inside of 2 freezer bags and using something kind of heavy (I used a potato masher) crush the cookies to fine bits. You don’t have to crush them all up in one go, feel free to do several batches.
Turn your crushed OREO cookies into your cream cheese and mix well.
Roll into a ball and then form into an egg shape.
Slide onto a lollipop or cookie pop stick.
Flatten the egg shapes out just a bit and place in the freezer for 15 minutes to an hour.
Cut white melting wafers into 4 pieces. Color yellow and add two black dots. These are your beaks!
Dip each pop into the melted red candy coating and quickly add 2 eyes and one beak.
Allow the coating to completely set and then draw two circles on either side of the birds chest, like wings.
Return to your melted candy and draw wings on, nice and thick with your melted red wafer candies and a spoon.
Add little dollop to the top for that classy cardinal ‘do and share’s winter’s prettiest bird with the ones you love!!!
