Be sure to get all the way to the bottom of the post where I’ll be giving away a pair of Rocky 4EurSole shoes to one very lucky reader!
To be honest I haven’t really been much of one to “go out”. I’ve never been to a nightclub and I’ve never done the girly things in movies like “going dancing”. My priorities have always been fairly homebody-like vastly preferring my ball of yarn to a fancy dress ball.
But now that I’m with Rob there are times where I MUST go out. Well, I suppose it’s not compulsory but I would look kind of like a jerk if I didn’t go! You see my Rob is an artist and with that comes a lot of events to attend. I truly never would have known about such things if I hadn’t experienced them for myself. We go to lots and lots of local art show openings to be supportive of Rob’s contemporaries. And then Rob has had quite a few of his own openings for us to go to and that’s great for him professionally.
We also go to local events so that his students can show their artwork. He’s not only the founding member of his art department but also the staff adviser for the school’s art club. So I’ll find myself on any given evening checking out a parade float that is being put together, “helping” during face painting at a local fair or just talking to students while they are creating amazing henna designs at a night-time art festival held in the downtown streets.
It’s kind of amazing but I have far more of a social life now than I have since high school, really. But way back in the day in my mid-twenties I had hoped to go out more but I was so broke and I felt awful. Medical bills pretty much consumed my entire existence and I sometimes had to figure out which was more important, medicine or food.
When things started to get better, largely because my Mimmie saw me struggling and helped me out, I suddenly had a little bit of cushion and I never had to make hard decisions again about what vital thing was more important. It’s amazing how when you’re in a hole it just keeps getting deeper and deeper but once you get out of it things get so much easier so very quickly.
Having learned that money doesn’t grow on trees I became the epitome of frugal. One day when my Mom and I went around town I found the prettiest dress and I wanted it. But I didn’t get it because it was expensive. I kept thinking about this dress and Momma drove me back to get it the next day. It would be my someday special dress… I wouldn’t wear it until I felt like something was special enough to wear it.
The other day I decided it was time to bust that dress out and wear her to town. The tag still on it I realized that my very expensive back then was $29.99. I put my dress on only to find that it was far too long for me, something that rarely happens. With my flats on I kept tripping over the hem of the skirt and knew that I needed some shoes with a bit of height. And when I considered all of the standing and walking I was about to take part in I decided to wear my new sandals by Rocky 4EurSole.
As it would just so happen to be I was able to walk for ages in these sandals and feel perfectly comfortable in spite of the fact that I had a huge cut across the top of my foot where I accidentally sliced myself open with a box cutter. Since the sandals fit nice and snug, without being over tight, it took a lot of walking before they started to feel like they were rubbing.
That night was a good one. Rob and I talked with some of his students and spent a good deal of time with one in particular. She was introduced to a local artist and gallery owner of great report and we were quite stunned when she, very bravely asked “can I show you some of my drawings?” We milled around while he talked with her and then we went upstairs to his amazing art studio/apartment where she got to see how a man who makes his living and thrives as an artist creates his art. I’m sure as a young art student this was an amazing experience and it was fun to be along for the ride.
I may or may not have just played with the dog and cat in the studio but everybody else was all about the art! Just so you know, dogs and cats will trump anything else that is going on. Ever. :)
Now let’s get entered to win one of TEN fabulous pairs of sandals, shall we?
