Last year I decided that it was high time I made stockings for my family. Unfortunately I started the second week of December and didn't exactly make the deadline and only finished up 5 out 10. The completed ones went into a paper bag and tossed into the craft closet to come out another day.
So now here I am, the week before Thanksgiving getting back into it. And in the spirit of generosity I'm sharing the first pattern I made from the stocking I whipped up for Momma last year.
You see Momma loves things like lawn flamingos and totally random stuff placed throughout her gardens, on her fence, you name it. This stocking came together really easily and she's already seen it and loves it (I am no good at keeping secrets - I showed her this summer).
Since I made these last year I don't have a photo DIY.
For this project you will need:
- felt in a variety of colors
- matching embroidery floss
- free flamingo felt stocking pattern
- needle and snips
- felt glue (optional)
The pattern has been created to fit on a regular sheet of paper. You will need to scale up to the size you would like.
Cut out two of the stocking shape, making sure that the better looking side of the felt will face the outsides.
Piece together on top of your stocking to make sure everything will work as cut. Tweak pieces if necessary.
If necessary, use a small amount of felt glue in the center of the felt piece to hold down while sewing on. Keep away from where you will actually stitch as felt glue dries rock hard.
The pieces that run along the edge of the stocking will actually hang over the side of the stocking. After you have appliqued all pieces, trim following the shape of the stocking for a cleaner edge when finished.
To make the cord for the lights, simply embroider. Be sure to have some cords in front of and some behind the flamingo for a greater visual effect. For the black dot in the eye, use a French knot.
Use a blanket stitch to affix the decorated front and plain back together and finish the stocking up.
If you have any questions, address in the comments and I'll do my best to help out!
Be sure to check back next week for another free felt stocking pattern!
